Trimming nails Ok..How do I make Bob let me trim his nails? He is PERFECT about getting a bath, etc..but will run and act like a nut when I try to trim the nails. They need it BAD....What do you suggest? |
Sit on him. :D Mine don't like it, but they will let me do it. In the beginning...it was a real job to hold a squirming dog and try to clip their nails. Nail trimming would take me 15 minutes...because of them fighting me. I did it any way...eventually they just realized....their nails were going to be trimmed....AND that afterward there would be TREATS. It takes less than 5 minutes. If I do Ramsey's first....the minute I set her down...she is demanding the treat. I let you do it where's the dang treat. Oh yeah...I do not let them see I have the clippers before hand either. |
well its really hard with him because he is 20 lbs and a handful when he doesnt want to cooperate! lol |

I'll try to describe how I held mine...I place them underneath my arm...between the arm and my body...holding tightly. Then I would grasp a paw...and clip. Understand...grasping one didn't mean they didn't pull that paw out of my hand repeatedly. Sometimes I would clip one nail...they'd pull their paw away....I'd get it again...clip...and so on. It was quite a battle. I don't have to hold their bodies like that anymore. I sit them on my lap. Groomers cut from the underside up....the dog is up on a counter and they just bend it at the joint...paw side up...and clip. Sometimes they are so unused to being placed up on something...they'll stand there for you. The only time mine are up on a table...are at the groomers or the vets. So at home...they stand dead still up on a counter. Just don't give in....he will realize he is having it done..whether he cooperates or not. Giving in just teaches him....enough fighting you and you won't do it, I think. |
Has anyone tried using this? It grinds nails and has a safety guard so hair isn't caught? http://www.kimlaubecoshop.com/index....PROD&ProdID=30 |
Thank you ...I will definately keep trying this. I know it must seem so simple..Just MAKE him listen and get it done but it has been a literal nightmare. Im so afraid that I will hurt him by holding him. But thanks so much for the information. I will be sure to yell from the roof tops when the task is completed! lol |
My SIL uses a dremel tool to do her dogs nails..No problems...Just zip and done... |
I use a grinder all the time now and never clip nails. They get used to the noise and really don't mind anymore. The know they will gewt a treat after they are done....:) It is fool proof after you learn how to use it and when to stop. There is a black spot which it the tip of the quick and if you stop there they never bled. With the grinder there are never sharp edges either!!! |
My vote is pay some one else!:cheer: I struggled for about a year, and then decided what the heack am I doing??? I found a groomer 15 min from my house. She charges 5.00 a dog. I took them there and this women put chewy on her table, and HE STOOD THERE AND LET THIS WOMEN CUT HIS NAILS!!!! Never has he done this before... He fights, there's almost always blood, biting,& we both are sweating by the time I'm done! THis women was a nail trimming angel. So let HER do it!;) |
I bring my baby to the vet. Afraid to hurting him. One of the assistants is always willing to do it. I call first. |
I'm lucky enough that my dad's a vet. So i hold madison and he clips away :) |
