Question for owners with long hair dogs How do you keep them clean around their mouth? Right now Teddi is taking medicine in her food and the food is soft food and it is always sicky and crusty in the hair around her mouth....do you wash their face after they eat? Also, as far as grooming for longer hair dogs do you just trim around their ears, and do the sanitary cleanup? What about around their feet? Do you groom around their feet? What about their tail...does the hair on the top of their tail just keep growing? I am trying to grow out Teddi's hair....figure might as well try so any tips would be great!! |
I use puppy wipes. In between baths I think they work great. I also use them when Rascal's rear end is dirty after he uses the bathroom. The hair on their tail does keep growing. As is gets longer you will need to make sure it stays clean so it doen't mat up. If Teddy goes outside, I would suggest you clip right around her toenails. This will keep things from sticking to her feet and causing little mats. I wouldn't go up the leg though, that would look silly if you are growing the rest of her hair out. Teddy is very cute. Soon I will put pictures of Rascal up. (I just found this website and I am very excited to talk to other yorkie lovers!!!) |
Hello! and Welcome! What I do is comb the hair around the mouth to get the big chunks out ( this means having to let the area dry first) Then I wipe it down with a baby wipe or ( preferably) a doggy wipe. Sometimes if it is too bad I just rinse his beard off or bathe him all together. I too am in the process of letting Louis' hair grow out in a not so traditional way, meaning I have been grooming him myself with a modified westie cut ( Westland Highlander- breed) I have many books on grooming and know for a fact that it is correct to trim the sanitary areas, the paw pads ( hair around and inside his actual paw pads- this is for sanitary purposes and would aid in creating traction for less slipping), and ears, tail is optional, but yes- traditionally you would let the tail grow long as well. You can google "show yorkie" or just "yorkshire terrier" to see pictures of many different grooming jobs. Hope this helped, Best of luck! |
I do trim especially the hair that grows in the pads of their feet and try to the hair on their feet so it looks neat and they don't step on it. |
I've never had a problem with Lacy's face getting messy. When I groom her, I shave the tips of her ears, trim around her feet, shave hair between paw pads, and shave vulva and around anus (sanitary). That's it...other than the few times I've even her hair up when it starts to look stringy |
With long hair pups and even puppy cuts, their mouth should be washed with a warm cloth to remove food after each meal, and don't forget their eyes (no soap though). Warmly, Deborah |
I bathe her once a week and brush her daily. In between I comb around her mouth to release remnants and if necessary would rinse the hair lightly with water. As for scissor/clipper work, I tip the top 1/3 of her ears and keep the pads and edges of her feet trimmed. As of yet we've never had any bathroom issues that require extra clean up and/or grooming, as she is quite tidy about her habits and it isn't a problem...yet...knock on wood! She is 9.5 months now and has relatively long, silky hair for her age, so we are getting there! |
I keep Slade in a puppy cut on his body and long top knot and face. He gets fed hard dog food, and as long as I brush it out every few day, I don't have any problems with it getting yucky. |
