how old was your puppy when...
 

sorry for posting here. this is more of a training question, but it is also very general... and most people view the general forum...

anyway, i'm also sorry that i'm posting a new thread, but when i tried to search for my question, i get an error message...

so here goes... how old was your puppy when he/she finally stopped having accidents in the house? or started being able to "tell" you when they have to go to the bathroom?

Kash is almost 12 weeks old, and he still just goes to the bathroom whenever and wherever he wants. most of the time, i'll catch him sniffing around, and that'll give me a clue that he's about to "go," but i want him to either come to me and whine or go to the door and whine or give me some kind of sign! lol.

like this morning, i was in the bathroom with him getting ready for work, and i turn around and he's pooping. i didn't get mad, but i did take "it" and him outside right afterwards to show him that poop belongs outside... but i don't think he understands.

also, i leave him in the kitchen at home during the day and i'm only able to come home once at lunch to let him out. more often than not, there's a puddle of pee waiting for me. i definitely don't get mad about that because i don't expect him to hold his urine for that long at this age, but do you think by allowing him to pee in the kitchen with no consequence is making him think it's okay, and thus delaying his training?

is 12 weeks too soon to be expecting him to be trained?

He is just a baby and needs to go out every few hours.
When mine are little I take them out every couple of hours and after:
they play
they wakeup
they drink
they eat
If you cannot be with him during the day I recommend a piddle pad.
My Brady is the first of my puppies to be trained on one and he does wonderful.

I think 12 weeks is real young!Try the pads in w/ your little one!
I figure their blatter is the size of a Marble when they are little- when mine was real littel- i think he had ablatter the size of a grain of salt!

Madison is piddle pad trained, but she didnt stop making mistakes until around 6 months...

my parents have a 7 yr old male bichon who goes outside but still makes mistakes in the house every week. boys are just harder to train because they want to mark their favorite places...unfortunately

My boy is 6 months. I have just recently been able to let him on the carpets without worrying to much about an accident. That's only if I take him out every one to two hours and even then he will still makes mistakes. So, he holds it some now where as before he would just pee all the time. But even at that, I still stepped in poo yesterday that was on my rug.

It took Lily till she was 7 months before I did not have to worry about it at home. I still have to watch her when we take her to other peoples houses. Good luck

You can also try to regulate their eating/drinking to work with your schedule.

At 12 weeks this will be hard to change as they are still very young but hang in there.. it will be over soon.

If you feed in the morning and afternoon at least you can take him out to poop shortly after and they may not go inbetween.

Same with the water. Though they need more water so water at lunch is also a good thing.

This should help but you will still have accidents.

ben finally got the hang of it at about 5 months and he is doing great. he is 6mos. now. all I can say is stay consistent and the puppy will learn to go outside, hang in there it can get frustrating at times.

I think that is expecting a lot from a 12 week old. All of them are different. I don't trust mine completely until they are a year old. But some train easy and others not. A lot of it depends on the conditions at the breeders home.

Puppy mill puppies typically do not have any option but to go in the cage.

For my puppies they have a separate area of the cage, to potty, right from the beginning so I'm hoping that he will be easier to train.
