Non Stop Barking
 

We got our little girl Darla on January 8th. She is almost housebroken. She is a very smart puppy and we totally adore her. Our only issue is she barks non-stop when she is in her crate. We originally had her in our bedroom in a pack and play childs play pen. That didn't work. She climbed out. We got a crate for her and moved her downstairs to the laundry room area. My husband and I let her sleep w/ us at night. Then she is wonderful. Only during the mornings when we are trying to get ready for work is the barking a real issue. We have tried a spray bottle w/ water. she still barked, citronella collar, she still barks, can with pennies, she still barks! We are very frustrated and do not know what to do. Those mornings are rough, aren't they?!

The thing that seems to be helping us with barking is one of the ultrasonic remote devices (not bark-activated, just a button to push). You can just have it in the bathroom with you while getting ready - handy to hit the button.

The other thing you might try is filling a kong with peanut butter or something that will keep little Darla busy and happy while you're getting ready. That will also equate getting ready with something positive instead of reminding her you're not paying attention to her.

I think this is not so much a barking problem, but a communication problem. She's trying to tell you she feels left out. Yorkies are definitely pack animals and like to be with the other members of the pack. I think some people just ignore the barking, and say it goes away in time; behavioral psychologist calls this extinction. Extinction is a behavior training technique where the animal gets no reward for its behavior. In other words, when it barks it never gets out of the playpen.

I could never do this. I would put Joey in his playpen for short amounts of time and tried to take him out before he barked, but as he got older he hated the pen unless I got in it with him. Punishing which is different than extinction usually isn't beneficial with this sort of problem.

I do think animals can "read" you, and if you feel guilty about having to put them in the pen while you get ready for work, they are going to bark even more. So once you have done what's best for your pup, and you know she's safe, just try to ignore the barking and don't feel guilty. Have you thought about a companion to keep her company while you're at work?

I agree with your furbaby trying to get your attention. Addie will bark at us if we are sitting on the couch and she is not included. She will make herself the center of attention and then come sit with us. She also does this when she wants us to play with her. They are very smart, so Darla is letting you guys know that she is not happy missing all the action. It can be frustrating!! Sorry that I have not found a way to stop it, I can just understand :)

our bobbi barks a lot when shes in the garden, she only stops if we go out and sit with her. I think its because she likes people around her and strange noises make her nervous. She barks at strangers but again I think this is her feeling worried. Your yorkie probably feels worried and left out sitting in her cage.

At pet smart they say to ignore them when they bark. Kinda works. I notice after him barking at something in the yard, birds, lol leavs. He will look up at me then start barking. They say to look the other way and ignor them.:dogwalk:
