Major jumper!!!!!
 

OK- I have a slight problem, nothing major, but I thought I would ask you guys for some advise. Luigi is a major jumper. I really can't stand it, but I do my best to keep him from jumping off real high things, such as my bed. (its 3 feet high) I have as stool (nice and cushy) for him to use, but as stubborn as he is- doesn't use it. :eek: So I try to pick him up and put him on the floor before he jumps. Then, when we leave and then come home again, he is sooo excited that he jumps up on us. He jumps as high as my stomach. I try to catch him if I can, but he is squirmy. 9 times out of 10, he lands back on his feet. But then there are times he lands on his side which freaks the crap out of me. But then he gets right back up and continues to jump! I even get down to his level, thinking he won't jump then, but no--he still jumps! :eek: Then trying to get him on his leash to go outside- its nearly impossible. I use my stern voice to try to make him stay down, then he gets scared and piddles. So I can't win. Then last night, he really scared the shi-shi out of me. He jumped so high when I came home, he must have bounced off me, cuz he landed on his back. My heart stopped. He was laying there and coulndn't move, then he did manage to get up, but he was hobbling and real lethargic. But a minute later, he was back to jumping again! So I squeezed all over his body to see if anything hurt when touched, and he seemed fine. Was runnin and playing like normal. The paranoid mommie that I am, I still called emergency vet and they just told me to keep an eye on him. They told me to make him stop jumping-!!! Da- I know! I wanted to scream. She told me it was all in the training, which I know- He is trained in every other aspect, but that. I try and try!!! Do any of you have any suggestions to keep him from jumping. I feel like I have tried everything- but there has to something that will help!!! Sorry for rambling on and on!!! I feel like a bad mommie!

As for the jumping I have the same problem with Simon. I am still trying to teach him to stop and it is so frustrating. I'm afraid he is going to get hurt all the time! I talked to a trainer who told me to teach him a command to stay on the ground. Ummmmmm sure, much easier said than done! I spend a lot of time picking him up, putting him on the stair off the bed, and to the ground over and over and over then when he does it by himself I give him a treat! He is pretty good about it now but still occasionally jumps off the bed (grrrr....). If you learn of any good ways to stop it please let me know ;) Hallie is too much of a princess to jump or run anywhere ;)

How old is Luigi? Tiah was a lot worse with jumping when she was youger (under 2 years). She seemed to think being in mid-air was the best place to be :eek: ! Landing was just an added bonus for her. She (sometimes still) would jump from THE TOP OF THE BACK OF THE COUCH TO THE FLOOR!! And not just at the foot of the couch, out across the floor as far as she could! Oh, it is infuriating because you can't stop them in mid air. That must have been terribly scarey when he landed on his back and didn't move....your heart probably stopped :( . I am glad he is doing fine now. I wish I had advice for you. I know I could say don't let him on the furniture, but I know the reality of that not happening. Good luck. Hi!! I have a jumper too and I worry about him a lot. He has been quite the little daredevil since birth! He also jumps from the back of the couch to the floor. He will use the steps for the bed, but not always. He climbs over baby gates and anything else we try to put in his way. He doesn't seem to be hurting himself, but I do worry about the long term effects as he gets older.

Gidget is quite the daredevil as well. Just last week my mom asked me why she was limping...I didnt notice. So I felt her all over and she never made a peep and just went about playing. then I started paying attention to how muh jumping she does....she gets on everything and everything :( We went to the bark park the other day and she was up and over everything not to mention jumped up on a resin chair and then tryed to jump on the back of it...I think we all know what happened next...the chair flipped and she was off and running not missing a beat. at our front gate she also will stand on her hind legs and jump like a jack in the box.....I think there is no spotting her...she is almost a year but im afraid if she keeps it up she wont last past 2...I have read that toy breeds have knee issues, I don't need to jump start the problems. But i am glad to hear that others have jumpy dogs as well.....no other dogs wee doing that at the park so i thought I had a crazy pup (well I do but that is a whole other story :P)

Maddie is a jumper also and I also worry about the long term effects. I swear there is no way to get them to stop doing that. I also try to lift her off of things, but then she just finds something else to jump on when I'm not looking. That is so scary...what happened to Luigi. Wonder if he got the wind knocked out of him or something. I know they can get back sprains, but would never come out of it that fast! Glad he's okay!!!

I can't offer much help for your dog jumping at you because we don't have that problem. we taught our pup that the only way he's getting picked up is if he sits there quietly at our feet, but our pup does think he's super man. he learned he can make big jumps if he takes a running start and stretches out and keeps running when he lands. sometimes he rolls. we found a solution to cushioning his landing by accident i bought a great big floor pillow (for meijers for $10) for me to sit on on the floor when i play with him. the pillow stays right in front of the couch he learned quickly it's fun to jump on. He doesn't have to worry about landing his jumps he just launches himself off the couch and flops onto the pillow like a kid in a moon walk. he loves it, he can't get on the couch on his own yet so if we're sitting there he'll repeatedly ask to get back up just so he can jump again. it's pretty funny.

I totally know how you feel. Jeremiah is a jumper too. My bed is low so I don't have to worry about him but my mom's bed is very high. I can't even get on it but he can. :rolleyes: The first day we got him. He was so hyper an djumpy. He jumped off of the couches and my mom's bed. I was soooooooo worried that he might break or something because he looks like a little toy. But now I watch out for him lot. Jane is a jumper too but she is older and bigger so she can handle it. But he is like monkey see, monkey do . So when Jane jumps he jumps. When Jane goes somewhere he goes somewhere. Its kinda hard to keep up with him. :rolleyes:

bandit was a big time jumper. one ime i was carrying him down the front steps. i thought i had a really good hold on him and he squirmed so hard we were 2 steps from teh bottom and he jumped. he landed on his back and wouldn't move. then i picked him up and he started squirming again. i don't really have any advice for you because tucker doesn't really jump. he uses things. like yesterday rusty our lab was laying against the couch. tucker ran across the room jumped on rusty then jumped onto the couch, it was really funny. he got down the same way. just keep an eye on him and if he jumps up then put him on the ground and say no jump. i know easier said than done. he'll catch on eventually!

My Harley was a jumper - he jumped on and off the couch and at least one time off the back of a chair. That really scared me!. He sleeps in a kennel or playpen at night because i'm afraid of him falling off the bed or trying to jump. Just when i was settling in to our routine he jumped off a foot stool in the den and broke his leg so badly he had to have surgery to repair with a plate and several pins. They had to take a bone graft from his shoulder.

well, it's just about killed me. He's finally beginning to feel like himself but still has at least 4 more weeks in his kennel. It there is any way possible you can keep them from jumping please do.
