I need help making a hard decision I need help making a hard decision. My husband and I got Macie (a toy poodle) about 5 months ago to be a playmate for Meeka. Meeka is one and only 2.5 pounds. Macie is about 8 pounds. Ideally I would like to be able to leave them both out when I am gone at work to play. The problem is that Macie is so mean to Meeka and really agressive. So I dont feel comfortable leaving them out since I wont be there to "save" meeka and seperate them. Macie is mostly attached to me so it is hard for me to give attention to Meeka cause Macie gets so upset and mean if I do. Do you have any suggestions on how to break her of this. I really think that she should be an only dog but I really love her and dont want to just give up. HELP! thanks |
Seeing that Macie is only 5 months old, I would crate her during your work hours. It's not cruel to crate, she'll be safe from any household dangers and you will have peace of mind while you are away. Give her food and water and a toy and she should be just fine. Good luck and remember she will change alot as she matures, so don't give up on her just yet. :D |
We have only had her for 5 months but she is 8 months old. I am hoping she will calm down and I do crate her now. I just dont know if the jealous behavior is really something that they grow out of..... has any ones experinced this? |

I have a 1 yr. old 4.5 lb. Yorkie, Chipper, and a 8 mo. old 6 lb. Pommie, Snowboy. I always put them in separate x-pens when I am gone, even for an hour. There is too much weight different for them to be together without my supervision. Sometimes, without even meaning to, Snowboy will get too rough with Chipper. There have been times when I will take Snowboy and put him in his x-pen to help him cool down. Maybe a behaviorist, obedience training, making sure Macie knows who is boss---any of these may be an option. Wish you luck. |
I have a 4 YO lab, a 2 YO sheltie, and 1 YO shih tzu. They are all crated when I leave home. But when I'm home, I let them play together in a more supervised area and 99 times out of 100, the bigger dogs run inside their crates to get away from the shih tzu. They are "terrified" of him. It's hysterical. He's still in that puppy stage and they don't want to have anything to do with that nonsense. The jealous thing goes away. The only thing we really have to watch is with the food bowls. Everyone must be separated during feeding time because of bowl envy. |
