Potty training 2 (I didn't want to hijack the other thread....) I'm sorry, I'm a real newbie, I didn't know if I should post this in the other potty training thread because I didn't know if that would be "hijacking".....What is the etiquette for that? Ask in someone else's thread or create a new thread? Anyway, here is my question with a quote taken from the other thread.... Quote:

It's usually best to start your own thread. I didn't train mine to pee pads...so I can't help you there. You do need to pick one method (pee pads or outside) and stick to that or you're likely to confuse her. Speaking sternly is enough. Sounds like she knows the disapproving tone in your voice. I took mine outside on the hour every hour during the day, definitely immediately when they wake up and before bed, and repeated go potty. When they actually go...have a potty party...praise, praise and/or treats. Do not let her roam freely in your house unsupervised. As long as the chips aren't chemically treated (some are)...I really don't think it's a problem. |
Oh gosh, I'm sorry, I need to clarify, it's not actually cedar chips, it's cedar "dust"...There is a local man here who mills cedar wood to get cedar siding for houses, when he mills it, the saw dust stuff is leftover....It's excellent for my daylilies, but it is really fine (small) and has a lot of slivers so that's why I was worried she would get slivers in her feet.... I do the potty praise and she totally ignores me or walks away, she wants absolutely nothing to do with the excitement....I haven't tried treats though....I don't really know what good treats are for her...she is so tiny, only about 3 pounds and 6 months old, and I worry about what treats are safe for her. I've given her carrots and green beans before, she absolutely loves them, but it never occurred to me to give them as treats for pottying before. I will try that I think.... |
catching them in the act and "correcting" them is as simple as saying "no" in a stern voice (no need to yell) and stopping them by lifting them up and putting them where you want them to go and if they finish their business in the correct spot give lots and lots of praise. You have to show them that they're doing something wrong by telling them "no" sternly and then you have to show them what you want them to. This is why it's so important to watch them like a hawk so that you can catch them in the act and "correct" it immediately. They learn very fast with repetition and consistency. I crate trained all of my dogs which I highly recommend and they're all potty trained to go outside. |

i have "lil jac training treats for small dogs" that i got from petco...you can try those. my little 1 pounder loves them!! they are nice and soft (good cus she barely has teeth) i swear she will pee on the paper just to get a treat. she looks at me after shes done a very tiny piddle like.. where is my treat huh? :p |
