Running lose outside without supervision So many people are doing this now it drives me crazy!!! Does anyone else do this and not worry?? We live in a smaller trailer park and I am telling you there are dogs and cats that just run the neighbor hood! We have a big germanshepard next door that used to be let loose all day while his owner was at work and he didn't get in trouble till enough people complained ( nearly six months!) and they saw little puppies running loose as he never fixed his animals and they had babies like crazy. I let my shelties out to potty but they are trained to come right back to the door and they only go out for about 3 mins. without supervision. Today I nearly ran over a little yorkie down the street from my home. I have seen this little guy/girl out for weeks now just running free and he has a little dog house on his owners porch. There is no fence though and I am just schocked he hasn't been ran over yet! But like I said, everyone but a few of us in this area seem to do it!! Am I the only one who is feeling like people are getting away with to much of this. Where are all the fines and dog/cat catchers? To me it's the same as condeming the animal to death with all the traffic. Maybe it'd be different if you lived on lots of land but ... I don't know. I am just to afraid to let my dogs out of my sight, especially little Milo. |
Wow that sounds sooooo dangerous for the little Yorkie! Can you try to do something about it? |
Bailey is never unsupervised! I agree, I don't understand how others can let their dogs run free. |
My dogs are never off leash and unsupervised unless in a fenced off-leash dog park, and then they are still supervised. |
Unfortunately, some people are ignorant. It would be a shame if someone's pet had to die because of their owner's stupidity. |
sassy does not get out of our sight she is on a leash when she goes out to potty |
I would have stopped and picked up the Yorkie...then posted flyers to see whose it belongs too...there is no need for a little one (or any others) to be running loose...especially w/ traffic!!! |
I live in KS. What in the world is a Yorkie doing running around loose in this weather? Where is animal control/those who are to protect animals? That is pure and simple animal abuse for that Yorkie to be running around in rain, sleet, snow, slush, freezing temps, and the nasty KS wind! If there is a dog house on the porch does that mean that the Yorkie is outdoors all the time? Good heavens! By the looks of what the weather is doing on the west coast, we are in for another round of nasty weather. Yikes!!!! |
We live in an apartment complex and my next door neighbors usually just open their door and let their dogs out to do their business. They open the door again when the barking gets ridiculous. They have two chihuahuas that are the loudest, yappiest dogs I've never heard. They also have a little Yorkie mix. It's crazy that they would let their dogs go unsupervised, considering they own dogs that are in high demand. I'm surprised they haven't been stolen. |
The ONLY time my dogs are allowed outside unsupervised for a minimel time (potty time which ranges from 3-10 minutes for all of them) is in our FENCED IN backyard. And even then, I leave the door open so they come in as soon as they've done their business. I could NEVER leave them unattended somewhere without a fence. Even if they're well trained, you just NEVER know what could catch their attention at any moment and have then dash across the street and not pay attention to possible car coming. And as little as our guys are, they can be easily missed by someone driving and get hit accidently. |
omg! that's so irresponsible. i think it's a problem that occurs all over the usa..we were actually chased by a big dog all the way home on a walk. then i started to carry mace. |
i would never dream of this... there are hawks around here and they are always circling around when my dog is outside.. |
Sounds like a lot of stupidity. Animals get hit by cars and stole. No one likes to have to clean up after their dogs all the time but I guess that is how these people circumvent that. Doesn't sound like they love their animals that much to me. |
I live in the city and although I have a fenced yard, Demi is never outside unless I am with her or standing in the doorway watching her. My neighbor made fun of me for this, but he doesn't understand -- somebody walking by could easily grab her and run. A man in another neighborhood in my city was walking his Manchester Terrier last fall when four armed men jumped out a car and stole the dog. Demi is not allowed out of my sight. |

We live in the country and have a big fenced in back yard that is kid and dog safe. My dogs all go out together. Right now they are just out for a couple of minutes, long enough to do their business because its freeeeeezing here. Well, I take that back, Lola has to be forced in because she LOVES the snow  which explains why she just had to be clipped :( Apparently rolling in snow = bad matting  I cried because she had the most beautiful coat of any Shih Tzu I have ever seen. Anyways, thats a whole different thread, I am just not over it yet can you tell ;) In the summer they go out and play for as long as they want, which isnt as long with Joe because he HATES the hot, but Cleo and Lola will play and I have to yell at them a lot because they like to dig. If I lived in the city I wouldnt be so free to let them play like that because of dog thieves, but I only have a couple of neighbors here, that are home all day, and we all watch out for eachother. Plus the neighbor to the west has some BIG dogs in kennels outside. So I am very comfortable to let my dogs outside unsupervised. :D I let my kids go out there and play without me too. |
I forgot to add that the people around the corner from us have a chocolate lab that is allowed to run the streets. No one complains because she (the dog) is friends with everyone and is huge fat because everyone feeds her  I dont like her running only because I am afraid she is going to get hit. Its farm country out here, so people can go pretty fast down the roads. Ironically, the owners (whom I dont care for) got upset with us one night because we were going for one of our nightly family walks/bikerides (half of us walk, half ride bikes), and the crabby old lady YELLED out our door that we should not let our children ride bikes because of people flying down the road in cars  For one thing, my kids stay on the side of the road, riding slowly alongside of my husband on his bike and stop completely when a car is coming. Secondly, if they are so worried about it, perhaps KEEP THE DOG AT THE HOUSE AND OUT OF THE ROAD! |
People are crazy listen to this, when I was about 16 or so we had a basset hound and she was outside playing with my dad and I was leaving to go somewhere so i was waiting at my driveway to pull out on the road and some random guy stops beside the road to ask me if that was my dog and I replied yea well then he drove off down the road so i pulled out and I looked in my rear view mirror and he had stopped beside the road and opened his door and took muffin:eek:  with my Dad right there  he then took off really fast and i tried to chase him down crying the whole time but by the time i got turned back around i couldnt catch up to him |
I think a yorkie- needs to not be left out all day- esp in the winter!Really no time unless in a fenced yard, then I would worry aboutsomeone stealing it, or it digging out - or something- but I am a worrier! But I think all animals should have there protection seen to by their owners- and plan for many things that could happen! Cause you never know!!! |
I am in Bonner springs and sadly there is so many animals running lose in our trailer park no one really does anything about it. Like I said, my shelties are trained, they only go outside to potty and come back in unless we are out playing with them, they don't go near the road or chase animals. But they do defend the house, if something or someone comes near them they run to the door and stand guard barking the heads off like crazy lol. Milo is just a tiny little pup and I would NEVER leave him outside unsupervised. I am also very picky about my kids. My seven year old hates me because I have NEVER and NEVER will let them go outside and play with an adult supervising them at all times. I am a stickler on this and she doesn't have a lot of friends because of it. So many kids run the streets in this neighboorhood from the age of two up and it's CRAZY!!! When I had a fenced backyard they got to play outside but only with me checking on them every couple of minutes. I am just to scared of all the crazy people out there. My family and friends say I am to overprotective of both my dogs. cats and kids. My cats also NEVER EVER go outside except to the vet. LOL - overprotective mom! |
Okay. This is such a pet peeve of mine (no pun intended) My neighbor has two cats that run around the neighborhood. It's very frustrating because not only are they outside in the cold and heat, but they are also pooping in my flower bed and walking on the hood of my car. One time I even had cat poop on the hood of my car   They have a son that has severe asthma and they had these cats before they had their son so I understand not letting them in the house, but come on! Find new homes for them where they can at least be petted and allowed indoors. Talking to them hasn't done any good and neither has calling animal control. My other neighbors had a pomeranian that they let run wild and I was finding dog poop in my yard  I'm very picky about this and always clean up after my dog. There is no poo in my yard from my dog because my kid steps in it. And it urks me when it's poo from someone else's animals  On top of that, the poor pomeranian was attacked by another neighbor's bigger dog that was running free and died. They told me this story and sounded very angry about it. I'm upset for the poor dog but not for my irresponsible owner's. What did they think was going to happen? We finally had to put a fence in the back yard so my daughter could play without having a big dog running up to her every five seconds. Geez people be a responsible owner or don't be one at all! |
