Help Needed Pleas... Potty Training Issues...

First, you can't let him have free run of any room without supervision until he has earned the privilege. I had a similar issue with Holly. Even when I was sitting in the same room with her, watching TV, she would sneak off behind the couch to poo. I finally blocked every method of her getting behind any piece of furniture. I kept her in her harness and leash and literally had her attached to me. The second I suspected she needed to go, I put her in her pen with the door shut and left her there until she went. She is now nearly 100% with pee and poo on the pee pad, as long as she is confined to the living room. If I let her have run of the house, she has not yet figured out that it is not OK to go wherever she wants. I think she is doing OK given we have only had two months together. This just takes time and persistence.

i take Ziggy out as i never had much luck with the pads. I take him out about 2-3 hours and usually leave the back door open. He has his accidents once in a while but its usually my fault

We had good luck with potty training. It took time, patience and consistency.

Yep - you can't let her run around the house. Block off the family room, lay down some blankets (so you can wash them to remove the pee smell) and keep an eye on them - every second!!! If you can't watch them - and I mean watch them every second - put them in a crate. We had the tv on - but all were eyes on the puppy.

The important thing is to catch them in the act and correct it - every time!

It took us two months (yes it was stressful and I worried it would never end - but it did). After that, she was 100% trained!! She's had only a handful of accidents after that - and I contribute them to lapse in judgment because she was playing and not thinking. :rolleyes:

Why not let him go outside to potty? I used puppy pads with Snickers when we first got him at 8 weeks. We had a pad in every room. He did ok with it, but something about him peeing and pooping in the house (even though it was on a pad) I didn't like. I hated when friends or family would come over and it would smell like a pet store in a room because Snickers had gone on the pad and I did't know it:confused: . Anyway after his puppy shots I had him use the potty out side and he loves it. He has an acare to pee and poo anywhere he wants. My vet also told me to ditch the pads, she said it makes housebreaking harder. She said you would never let a Great Dane use a potty pad in the house, they would go outside. You would watch them like a hawk. Use the same techniques on big and small dogs. Snickers is a little more that 10 months old and has been completely house broken since he was 4 months old and also has the run of the house (even when we are not home). When he has to go out he will either ring his door bell or jump up at me and bark. He is also a bigger boy so I don't know if this helps him or not.

Well I guess I could have him go outside but we don't have a fence and it's a small yard. My shelties were easily trained and they are let out four times a day to potty unless we are out there with them, they run out side potty in the yard then come back up to the deck to be let back in. I would just be afraid he'd run off and get hurt by a car or another animal. I would love to teach him to go potty outside though if you think that taking him out on a leash for a couple months would work? So others have had more success without side potty training rather than potty pads?

I think that having other dogs that go outside will make it easier for him to do his thing. I have another dog (a Boxer) and I think that is why Snickers did great going outside. He would follow Seamus around and pee in the same area. I also keep a "treat jar" by the door. I keep an eye on him when I let him out, once he has done his thing I call him back. When he comes back in side I have him sit tell him good boy and give him a treat. Giving him a treat keeps him from getting into trouble when he is outside. Using a leash at first will work fine. You can take the leash and put a small cat bell on it. Hang it on the door where he can reach it. When you think he has to go potty rush him to the door and shake the bell with leash in front of him, then say do you have to go potty. Put the leash on him and take him out. When he does his thing praise him, bring him back in and give him something tasty. This is what worked for me. I don't even need to use a leash now, Snickers is just ready to come back and get a snack.:D Yorkies are real smart and learn fast.

It can be a problem, I have never pp pad trained.. now she does not want to go outside.. I would never choose to do it that way again...:eek:

Put him in an xpen outside and potty training will be a snap! (As long as you take him out often!) There was something about being enclosed when they go that makes it easier. I think it's cause they don't sniff around all that much. (It's enclosed so after sniffing around once... They really have nothing left to sniff!
I never ;eave Chewy out there alone, but he always goes with in 5 min. He was easy to potty train this way!;)

Wow..he sounds a bit like my Piper. She does use her piddle pad properly now..but the funny thing is that you can't look at her while she is "going". Apparently she likes her privacy. I am not sure if it is because the training I did said to "throw a party" and whoop and say yay and make it all exciting when they do the right thing...maybe she hated that? Now she piddles on the pad, then sits on the floor next to the pad until I notice, or she comes and finds me. She gets a teeny little treat every time. Also I say the word "hurry up"...not loudly now...when she goes. She understands what that word means and has actually left the more than once after hearing those words to visit her piddle pad. She's 9mos now and this is a fairly recent change. I thought she'd never learn. But I wonder if your little guy is afraid of maybe the praise part? I know that sounds silly, but it sure seemed to be the case with Piper.

we crate trained at first; up every 2-3 hours and put him on the pad. We got xpen and it was the best thing ever. Everything Hot Rod needs is right there, bed, potty, food, water and toys. We watched him like a hawk and when we put him on pad, we told him to "do your stuff", then we praised him everytime he'd use pad and gave him a small treat. Hubby took him out at about 4 1/2 mos and he went all on his own and has been doing so ever since! I think he prefers to poop outside since he hops around so much but he will go on pad, sometimes it lands right at edge or over. I also noticed that he doesn't like a dirty pad, I can let it go for 3 pees (if he has mostly used one side of pad, sometimes 4). We started to notice Hot Rod pooped about 5-10 minutes after he would wake up in am so we take him out right away and he "does his stuff". He gets a treat everytime we come in.

We let him have free reign of the downstairs at first but due to a couple of accidents I put a barrier to keep him in the living room with us and xpen. At night he goes into xpen or when we were not right there for a extended period of time. I've just added the hallway and kitchen areas to his domain. I've even felt more comfortable with leaving him out of his xpen while I am somewhere else in the house for a length of time. Hope this helps some.:)
