Traveling alone with 2. Suggestions?
 

I am planning on taking both girls to the beach at the end of May, a 3-4 hour drive. Last year, it was just Gracie. I stuck her in her carrier and took her with me into the restroom at the rest area. The sign says "no" but no one was the wiser. This year, I will have Holly so I don't think I can get away with this so easily. Have any of you traveled alone by car with two or more Yorkies in the summer? How do you handle potty stops, food, etc.? What do you do when you can't leave them in the car and they can't come with you (like to use the restroom)? I'm so glad I got the stroller, it will be much easier to take them to crowded public places. I got a room with a kitchen, ground floor with a deck so it should be easy to take them outside to potty (even though they use pee pads). The hotel lets me leave them alone in the room as long as they are crated and quiet. Ha Ha. Quiet. Ha Ha. I figure that would be OK if I had to run out to the grocery store for a minute and it was hot outside so they could not go and stay in the car. I think I am overly paranoid about theft. I just won't leave my girls alone in the car unless they are in direct view, like when I stop in to get my mail. Any suggestions for traveling alone with multiple Yorkies would be appreciated!

Is it possible that the "no" sign might be meant for dogs that are on leashes? Maybe if you put both of them in your stroller you could take them with you into the restroom at the rest stop. The way most people try to ignore each other, maybe no one would even notice what you have in your stroller. Hope you find an answer that you can live with and keep your furbabies safe.

I just bought a carrier that both fit in. I would try to go potty with them. Hang the carrier on your shoulder and just walk in. No one is paying any attention to you. They see a carrier that looks like a duffle bag and they have no idea.

I have taken mine in the food store also. I needed a prescription and the vet and the food store are 1/2 hour away. I had Sadie with me after the vets and I took her in to fill it and get a few things. I put the tote in the cart and no one knew she was there. In an emergency you can do it for a few min.

For 3-4 hours?? I go to my sisters in KY and it's almost 7 hours, and I only stop once for gas. If it were just 3-4 hours, I probably wouldn't stop..

The rest areas say "Service animals only". I did think of the stroller with the cover zipped down, but I would have to use the handicap stall if I did that. That is a good idea though.

If it's only 3 to 4 hours, I just wouldn't stop.

You can also drape a blanket over the stroller or carrier....... and I agree.... you can use the handicap facilities. ;)

I wouldn't recommend leaving them in a vehicle at all...... too big of a chance that someone could break in and take them..........

I could also recommend that you find out where the Petsmarts (or Petco) are on the way. You CAN take them in with you, AND you can use the restroom..... I have even taken pee pads in the restroom with me for them to use!!! ....... I think it is safer than a rest area.

That is a great idea. I have never seen a public restroom in a Petco, but I have never really looked for one either! I will be going through some really small towns, but I will have a looksie. Thanks much.

I agree with this. I travel alot with my four year old daughter and my dog. Limit their water intake and you shouldn't even have to stop. I throw a handful of food into Tucker's crate so he can eat, but and I limit the water for us all. We usually leave around 5 am. Everyone is so groggy that I can get 5 hours into my trip without ever having to stop. The only reason I stop at 5 hours is because I run out of gas LOL! Seriously, I can make a 9 hour trip and only have to stop once when I do this. I think getting a bag that can hold two is a great idea too. I usually stop a rest areas and a "no dogs" sign is always posted in the restrooms, but he comes in anyway. I can get away with this at gas stations too. Nobody notices a well disguised dog purse.

LOL you and I need to travel together...I'm one to get in the car and only stop to get gas, and maybe use the bathroom once or twice(on a 14 hour trip)..it's my hubby, he gets an hour from home and we have to stop for him to go pee, I tell him he's worse than a kid...I like to just get in the car and go without stopping...he adds at least 2 hours to each of our trips..

Can they wear diapers? If not maybe you can stop once at a grassy area and walk them real quick. Also i would only give them water maybe twice and take them out to pee like 20 min later. Good luck!

It's not the dogs pottying that worries me. I can take them anywhere. It's MY needing to pee and can't take them with me that worries me.

LOL that would drive me nuts! Really, I just can't stand to take all day to get somewhere and prefer to drive alone because of this. I'm about to drive to WV with a friend who takes all day to get somewhere. Her four year daughter needs to stop all the time (which is completely understandable) My four year old is just a freak of nature with a bladder of steel I guess. But she also stops to feed her dog. I don't know why he can't eat and travel at the same time. I would just make the drive myself but I think it would hurt her feelings. Anyway, I've already told her that I'm probably going to kill her on the trip LOL!

LOL....I know a 6 hour drive with my hubby, would take me 3...:D

You all must have bladders of steel. I drive 4 hrs every week and have to stop twice to go to the bathroom
