Pee Pads Hi All Okay........ so we have a dilemma... The girls are pad trained......... however, they have begun tearing up the disposable ones. SO, now I am using the cloth ones (they are those hospital ones that i just picked up from a supply store). HOWEVER, i have found that these cloth ones smell really bad if I dont change them everyday. I usually go two days because its difficult to do so much laundry, but its really gross. I don't know if having cloth ones are worth it... but the girls destroy the paper ones. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Or am i just going to have to do more laundry. Also, does anyone have any cloth ones that have an odor repellent or something? My husband found this grid plastic one online but i dont know if the girls will even go near it or not and dont want to waste 50 dollars for no reason... Ideas anyone?? |
I use the disposable ones as well and Maggy got to where she's wanna play with them and drag them everywhere. I was constantly chasing her down to retrieve a puppy pad from her, lol. I just stayed consistent in taking them from her and telling her no in stern voice and then giving her a toy to play with. Granted, at times she'd run right back to the pad to run off with it again, but I am just as stubborn and strong willed as her and eventually she left it alone. My daughters pup chews the puppy pads up as well, so she got the ones with adhesive on the back of them thinking they would stay down stuck to the floor and he could run off with them and chew them up, BIG waste of money there, it just made him rip into them more and before you knew it, it was right off the floor, lol. I've never used the cloth ones, perhaps someone can give better advice on those. Good luck. |
Rather than the grid, you might have better luck with one of these: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...=0001597000000 The frames hold the pad in place, but the surface isn't covered by anything, so it will stilll feel like what they're used to! |
I bought some washable/reusable pads at Petsmart and there has been very little odor. It starts to smell about the time it needs to be washed, once a week or so with one puppy. |
I use the hospital or "reclaimed" pads as well. I treat them just like you do with cloth diapers. I got diaper pail with lid (any waste basket with a lid will do as well) and keep baking soda in the lid insert. I have a mixture in a spray bottle of water and tea tree oil and spray the pee spots on the pad with this and fold them soiled side in and place them in the diaper pail. I have 12 of the washable pads and change them about twice a day. This method really keeps the smell contained. I also spray my pail out with Odoban on washing day. Just make sure you kinda open up the pads when you are putting them in the washer to make sure they get clean! It's really alot better for the environment and much cheaper than the disposables. I thought it was the best investment I've made as far as puppy pads go! I wash them about once a week, so I don't think that's too bad as far as laundry goes. |
If you fold the pads dirty sides in (I usually fold them in fourths) the smell seems to be contained really well. I just stack them next to the washer until I am ready to wash. You can also spray the dirty spots if you like with Odo Ban or vinegar water if it seems to be extreme. But as long as they stay folded I really don't have any problem with the smell. Another option is to put them in a garbage bag with a twist tie. You can get Odo Ban at Sam's. |
hi, ive used the training pads for a year now, no problems with buttons ripping them up, just to cold to take her out in the winter, she doesnt like the snow.. |
I have used the pee pads almost exclusively and although archie had a few accidents in which he started to attack the pads he did get over it and he uses them daily without a problem. Hopefully it's just a phase!! |

I bought from Little Bit.. I just purchased some from Little Bit and they are REALLY nicely done. I have 4 of them and will probably be getting more in the future. Shelby has already started using them and they are really absorbent. |
I guy my washable pee pads from Nancy (Little Bit) and with two girls using them exclusively, they only need to be washed about every 4th day. Until then they don't smell at all and they wash up very nicely, too!!! |

My mom at 70 trained her puppy like this. At the time the dogs I had went outside. But Allie will not always go in the winter. So I have the washable ones too now.. My mom went out and bought a diaper genie, those of you who have/had babies know what these are. I got one at a garage sale cheap...lol Just do the pads in this...till its time for wash day Double rinse, then use odor ban and the pads are like new. And no stinking in between. If past the baby stage check ebay! |

Thank you so much for all of your responses!!!! :-) Okay ..........what i'm thinking is....... to stick with the cloth ones. One cloth pad is the same price as one bag of paper ones that last 3 weeks with two dogs. I'm just going to have to get more cloth ones (I'm going to go check out Little Bit's stuff right now), and in the mean time I just did a little research on the cloth pad from Petsmart and that one has smell repellent - so in the mean time I'll just buy one of those (they are SO expensive!!!!!!!! like twenty dollars!!!). I am VERY tempted to order that plastic holder for the disposable pads, but its just not economical for me...... Another question......................... How did those of you who have your pups go outside -train them from the pads to go outside??? Now that the weather is better I take them for walks and Jaya eliminates her stuff wonderfully while the little one holds it in until we get home....... But are there any tricks anyone has for me to get them to WANT to go outside?? I heard of the door bells for them to hit, but how does one get to that point??? |
