Ok - Give me the scoop on getting *another* Yorkie!!
 

We've had Sophie for 3.5 months. She is almost 6 months old. We are THISCLOSE to purchasing another one, but before I pull the trigger, I wanted input from those of you who have more than one.

My concerns are:
Will a new puppy mess up Sophie's routine with sleeping, potty training, etc? My main concern is that the new puppy doesn't wake up Sophie at night when she's learning to sleep thru the night.

Traveling with 2 yorkies. I am only one person, and I take Sophie with me a lot.

Basically I wonder if 2 is just too much to handle.

Did any of you find that the second one was easier, just because you kinda knew the ropes?

Or did you think 'what have I done?' after adopting the second.

I would love to hear any pros and cons.

I have a couple of reasons for wanting another one.
THe biggest reason is that I simply want another Yorkie to love, raise and bring into our family.

The other reason is so that Sophie will have a playmate. She spent a night with my sister and her Yorkie, and had the time of her life. Even my sister is now thinking of another one.

Sorry I can't help you. I, too, have been thinking of getting another yorkie. I have a male yorkie who is now 13.5 weeks. I've had him four weeks and he has been a delight. I also have a Smooth Fox Terrier and even she has enjoyed having General Patton's(my yorkie) company. So, I now am thinking of getting a female yorkie.

I have two Yorkies but i got them two weeks apart from another. I used to take Jack in my little purse. Now that I have two it is a bit more of a hassle. But there are also advantages. Its so fun to watch them play and cuddle together. I was wondering have you pretty much have a good routine with the potty training?? I am not sure if your baby will regress or not I have heard different viewpoints on this. Another issue is that Jack is 10 weeks and Mandy is almost 6 months and are on different potty schedules. How old would your next pup be?? Oh I also believe that if you are going to get a second one don't wait til they are older because I did this with my Beagles they were 4 years apart and my female that was 4 could take or leave my male beagle. So I guess if you think you can do it I would do it now rather then later. But if you are hesitating about getting another one altogether then i would wait. Hope this helped a bit. :rolleyes: :)

i dont have two, but, i would imagine that lugging around two would be a hassel......... also, it is a little unfortunate when the new puppy bonds not to you but to youre other yorkie :( is your other one potty trained? i think one is hard enough (not to mention they periodically regress) i cant imagine having two in the potty training process......

I've been talking to the same breeder and she's got one almost 8 weeks and one that's 5 months...I'd rather have the 5 month old I think....I got my boy when he was 4 months and he's now 6 months. Of course I would take him and see how he interacts though. I really would like Romeo to have a brother since he's home alone during the day but I am afraid his potty training will regress and he's been doing SO GOOD in the last few weeks. I hope she has a payment plan when your a repeat buyer! :D

I have two....The first two weeks were tough, but after Tino accepted Bunny, I have not regretted it for a millisecond! He is soooo much happier having a playmate! They are like glue with each other! AND both are totally bonded to me!
Tino was just under a year when I got Bunny. My reason for getting a second Yorkie was mainly for Tino. I would always feel totally guilty when I left him at home. Now that they have each other, life is sooo much easier.

I had the exact same worries as you about routine, etc... Tino was totally potty trained on the pads and luckily Bunny was potty trained within the first week also. I used a small ex pen set up and put her pad inside the ex pen right next to his so she would know where she was supposed to go.
Tino is not dominant at all and Bunny was so feisty since she was used to her littermates, that it took about a week- two weeks for them to totally bond and play together. I think the most important thing is that your first knows that your second is not a replacement for them. YOu have to make sure that you feed your first before your second, just stuff like that.

As far as taking two with me. I just put Tino on his leash and put Bunny in the carrier. Tino is 4lbs so he is fine on the leash. Its really not a problem taking both of them.

I think its a great idea having two. Tino is still mommy's baby and a little lap dog. Bunny is a total mommy's girl, but she is much more independent. I love it bc I feel like I have the best of both worlds. I would suggest getting the opposite sex on what you have. As far as the second being easier... that wasnt the case for me bc Tino was upset at first and made me feel really guilty for getting Bunny. SO I was worried about Bunny getting settled in and feeling loved in her new home, but at the same time I was sooo worried about my little baby Tino's feelings. But like I said it was only a week or so before everything fell into place! I hope this helps! Good luck !

I plan on getting a male Yorkie when my dog, Cailee, passes over the bridge. I'd already have another one if the Marine Corps didn't only allow two dogs at a time. Since the Corps will be our life for a while, I'll have to wait. But, that's okay. Two is plenty. Poor Cailee couldn't handle another puppy right now anyway.

Might Romeo want a new sister instead of a brother? I didn't know you were also thinking of another. The breeder that I bought General Patton from has another litter and she is due later this month. So, I've been kinda thinking....hm.......hm... of getting another one from her, but definitely a girl and I am wanting a smaller size. General Patton is close to 5 lbs at 13.5 weeks. He's grown by leaps and bounds

Well...I'm not sure. I'd love to be able to do all the "prissy" things but I've never had a female before. I've always been partial to boys. I know this is probably the dumbest question in the world but if you have a female spayed, they don't have a heat cycle anymore right?

Tonia- She is a cutie!!! She has very feisty little eyes like my Bunny! I agree with you... I have never had a female anything in my life! I too am totally partial to boys. I got a girl bc Tino was totally potty trained and had never lifted his leg or marked. So many people told me that if you get another male and there is a competition for dominance, that youd can have a marking nightmare on your hands! The first one could start to mark and then the second male could follow suit. As much as I love little boys, I was not about to risk that!

I had Nikki a little over a month when we got Littleman. We had just gotten used to having one and how she changed our daily routine. After getting him, the routine changed again to fit everyones individual needs. To me, it is just like having another baby. You just make everything work. I've been lucky and things are going very well. It's fun for us because ours have two completely different personalities. If one isn't making us laugh, the other is. You know how Yorkies are, they are just so entertaining and loving. I'm glad I have mine. We love them both so much!!

I now have three as I just brought home my new little girl, Baby Ava, today! I got my first, Hefner in December and then I got my daughter a girl in March. They are two months apart in age. I also got her as company for him and because we just fell in love with the breed and wanted to feed our addiction! My Hefner is also easy going so Chai gets her way a lot of the time but they both feel oved. Chai gets jeaous but we don't let that discourage us from showering Hefner with love. He is more independent and she is more clingy

They all sleep with me in my bed and I have steps for them to get up and down to go potty as they need to.

Chai doesn't like to go in the car because she gets carsick so Hefner goes with me everywhere but Chai only occasionally. It is actually easier because they entertain each other so they are not constantly asking for your attention.

I would love to hear any pros and cons. All of the things you mentioned are concerns and I have to make special plans when I travel. Tomorrow we are going to the San Diego Yorkie meetup and I am bringing my daughter to help so they can all go.

But I was advised to wait until the first yorkie was fully trained in every way. And so we did. And I am very thankful we did, because the first one took nearly a year to get potty trained and the new pup is now close to 6 months and almost trained! Kali will come to me when she thinks Mare needs to go out and I can let them out to avoid accidents. Now Mare sits at the door if she needs to go, so if I don't see it, it's my own fault :)

Kali has taught Mare so many things - going down stairs for example, we taught Kali and she taught Mare. Also to come when we call them.

The downside is that Mare doesn't know her name and will respoond to Kalis. But we plan on giving Kali a vacation with her uncle (my brother in law) for a week and train her during that week.

So it'll all be good :)

I can't say what is right for you, all I can say is that because we waited it was MUCH less of a hassle with Mare.

I bought myself a bicyclebasket: http://loppetjansen.dk/product_info....oducts_id=1007 and that is cool, I can take the girls everywhere with me. Skagen is so small you don't need a car, we mostly go by bicycle :)

This is a great post! I am also thinking of adding a little female maybe in October. Copper is 5 months old now, so he will be 8 months old then, and hopefully neutered and recovered by then. It is just such a big decision, and I am wondering how I will do with working and taking care of 2. I guess I did it with my two children, but I am a bit older now and not as much energy...lots of pros and cons to consider....but would love for Copper to have company during the days while I work...4 years until I can retire...Good luck everyone on your decisions.

It probably would be a little more work, but imagine all the joy you'll have. Two cuties to take with you, two to play with, two to love. I'd go for it.

Hi, what part of Florida are you from? I am in Orlando.

I only have the one. I don't think I could handle two. Since I'm the one who feeds, grooms, cleans up after, trains and plays with Maggie--two would be too much. I too take her everywhere I can with me. I pack her little "To Go" bag. Put her in her carseat, and make sure I have her stroller. If I had two, oh my goodness--I think I would just stay at home. :confused:

I know. There is a lot to think about when you have 2. My son says two are just as easy as 1, but I am not sure. I really would love to have a female in the Yorkie standard colors. I have until October to make up my mind. Brenda, did you get your carrier yet from PetEdge? If so, how do you like it? Just wondering.

I have mixed feelings. I know it will make travel and even leaving the house more difficult, if I take them both with me. OTOH, leaving them both home to play together will make them and me happier.

I just don't want 'buyers remorse'. My desire is that a new Yorkie would be a good fit for our family, but the reality is that it might just disrupt the balance we've achieved with our first Yorkie. Added to that is the fact that, like Stitches, I am the one who does 99% of the caretaking.

I'm gonna sit on this decision for a while. Meanwhile, keep the discussion going!

I am sure you will think we are NUTS! I lost a yorkie on the 4th,( SAD STORY) she was 6 1/2, I have a rescue yorkie that is 7,(have had her 5 years) I have a Keeshond that is 12,(bought as a pup) a rescue maltese that is 13, (have had him 10 years), a rescue Pom that is 8,(had him 4 years), and a rescue pekepom that is about 9, (had him 5 years) AND a Himalayan Persian that is 2, bought at 8 weeks)! All my babies are family, never a fight, they play and sleep and snuggle with all. My cat thinks he is a dog, of course. We have them all on Nutro and they all are house pets and extremely healthy! We have LOTS OF LOVE in our home!!!! We are Seniors, kids grown, grandkids! We traveled for 6 years with my husbands job and they ALL go everywhere we go!

I have two a male & female. I got Mellie when Mac was 6 months old. They are 3 months apart in age. It was the best thing I did. Mac took about a day to realize that she was staying. The only thing I noticed is that if you pet Mellie or pick her up "Mr. I Was Here First" needs to be picked up too or jumps over her to be first in line for cuddle time. I really don't find two to be that much more work than 1. The First couple of times traveling with them together by myself was rough but I have worked out a system. Since Mellie listens better she always first in and last out. The only thing they will fight over and very rarely is if Mellie takes Mac favorite toy. I think she does it just to annoy him at times. The only down side is that I love to spoil both of them and now it just costs me twice as much. ;)

I was in a similar situation a little while ago, but after a lot of reading and talking on yt, I decided it was time. I got my second baby about 3 weeks ago, and it was the best decision I ever made. Kona (my girl) is about 14 months old and Hilo (boy) is almost 11 wks now.

I live with my boyfriend, so there are two of us to take care of them, which makes it a lot easier since puppies are sooo much work. We originally wanted another one because Kona started getting extremely sad and lonely when we would leave her. She's completely trained, so it was time to get her a friend. We went with a boy because a lot of people (on yt and the breeder) told us that the boy/girl combo works really well. Kona is spayed (no hormones = no preggers and no heat cycles), and Hilo will be neutered. We introduced them to each other outside in a neutral territory. The sniffed each other for about a day, and they have been playing together all day everyday since we brought him home! They love to play tug of war together with the rope. I was worried that Kona being full grown at 6.5 pounds would be too rough with Hilo (2 lbs) when they played, but he is such a little brute! The little guy always goes back for more and even pins her sometimes (playfully of course)! They love each other. He's also almost completely litter box trained already so i can leave them alone together in their pen without locking him up in his crate.

For us, it was good to wait until Kona was completely trained to get another one. I can't imagine training two little ones at the same time at different levels, but I'm sure it can be done by some people here! I was afraid she would revert backwards if she saw him having mistakes, but it hasn't really been a problem, especially since he's had so few mistakes. It's definitely a lot easier the second time around. I know where I made mistakes with training Kona, so I'm very careful not to repeat those. I'm being a lot more strict with Hilo's access to the house and his schedule of eating, pooping, and peeing. It's definitely paid off!

I got Lacey when Chloe was 6 months old. I guess it was for selfish reasons, I just loved the breed and Chloe is an active yorkie who would bring toys for me to play every minute so I thought a companion would help. Did it ever. They love each other, play all the time, with me and without me, get along great and I really haven't had a problem with possibly the exception of feeding. Chloe will eat both her and Lacey's food, so I feed Lacey in another room. It has definitely been a plus. As far as taking them, it is a little more complicated because Chloe is bigger, about 7 lbs, Lacey is 3lbs. So, sometimes I leash Chloe and just pick Lacey up. Sometimes I pick them both up if I'm not doing a lot of shopping and just put them both in a cart. I haven't tried a doggie stroller but I think I will get one. I don't consider it a problem at all though, it's just an adjustment. Actually Chloe helped potty train Lacey. When she went out, so did Lacey, so she trained earlier, she was pretty much trained at 5 months, an accident occasionally. So, I recommend it. It is also so cute to see them together. I even have individual toys, I can tell them to get their balls for fetch play and they do it. I throw Chloe's first, then Lacey's and they keep track, get their own and bring it to me for a treat. One last thing, because they are with each other so much, about night night time, Lacey can get grumpy. I have them in separate kennels so they each have their night space, next to each other but in the morning, they are so glad to see each other. Good luck

I have two a male and a female. They acccepted each other right away. My male is the alpha and the female is the follower. I love having two. They keep each other company. They also get into mischief together. The only part that has been difficult is potty training because there is only a 2 month difference in them. Good luck!
