new puppy questions... hello all i am getting a new yorkie pup in March and I am so excited! But, he will be 5 months old when I get him and the breeder has him trained to pee pee pads and she does not use a crate. She keeps him and the other puppies in an exercise pen. I live in an apartment and I am in school for a few hours during the day, so I am going to have to use a crate, and I'd like to train him to go outside. How will I go about doing this since he will already be 5 months old?! Is it impossible to change the habits he will have already learned? Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks! |
welcome and congrats on the upcoming additon :) I can't help with the pad training because Layla never was but i know someone on here will be able to help. But can you get an x-pen for him or put him in a smal room when you are gone during the day so he doesn't have to be in a crate? this way he can still be pad trained during the day when you are gone. |
yeah i was thinking about that but i am just super paranoid about leaving him out--i would hate for him to get into something and hurt himself. I just have very little space in the apartment so it would have to be a small ex pen! i am moving in may and i will have lots more space so this situation is only temporary! |
I think at this point, an ex-pen is going to be better for him than crating him. I'm sure it's doable but he's going to be going through so much stress already.. he may have a hard time with it. If you can't use an ex-pen can you buy a baby gate to block him off in the kitchen or a bathroom area? |
I don't know what to do, but good luck! You will love it here on YT! |
you know, i think i am just going to buy a small ex pen--b/c i just don't think i am going to be able to handle putting him through the extra stress of getting used to crate training! i will just rearrange a lil bit to accommodate. Like i said i am moving into a great new house in May where the new pup will have lots of room to play! thanks guyss:) |
I don't think you should crate him at this point, it would probably just cause anxiety and behavioral problems. I agree with everyone else who said to get a pen for him. You can always use the pee pads while you are gone and then when you are at home take him outside a lot and praise him and give him treats whenever he goes potty outside. |

Here is the one I have: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=1762412 They have the exact same one at Petsmart but it's a good $40 more expensive. The panels can be removed to make it smaller. We've removed one and made it into a square before. It's not very space consuming but (I think) still gives them enough room for food/water, a potty pad, toys, and a bed. Here's a picture of Franklin's when we had it in a square: |
