Do you think that it's worth it... Hi everyone - I just wanted to ask everyone out there if they think that getting my little guy microchipped would be worth it? To me, any price is worth it if my dog may one day be returned to me if he ever got lost. But my cheap ass bf thinks that it's a waste of money because he said that if anyone ever did find a dog like a yorkie, that they wouldn't return it anyway. That they would either keep it for themselves or try and sell it to make some cash. I know that he does have a bit of a point because there are people out there like that. But for a measly $100, I am willing to take that chance and spend the money in hopes that he will be returned to me, if (god forbid) that ever happens. Anyone else's significant other this cheap??? I am so mad at him right now. |
Eveen if they didn't want to return him...I think the chip comes up with your name..and if he was lost you could report it, so if/when the people that found him took him to the vet you could track him. I am not sure if this is correct...just how I thought it would work??? But here it costs like $50.00 I think so I will be having them do it to Maximus when he gets neutered..and yeah my bf is a scrooge too!!! BTW...the first day Maximus went to his checkup he ran the microchip thing over his body to see if he was microchipped and said he does it for every dog if it is their first time at his practise!! |
Wow, a $100 sounds steep. Is that what it costs there? I don't think it's anywhere near that price around here but I'm not sure because I haven't had Tatum done yet. But of course it would be worth it to know that you went that extra step to make sure your baby found it's way home in the dreadful event it got lost. You just have to count on someone honest enough to do the right thing and get her to a vet to check the chip. |
In my opinion it is worth it but like you say those cheap ***. my husband says they don't need it because all we need is a tag giving the address. I tell him no one would bring Buckeye back even if they knew where he belonged. Ahia I am sure they would return after a day with them. LOL. any suggestions how to accomplish it let me know |
I decided against it. Its only $35 here. Have you checked other vets for prices? |
You should shop around at other vets. Its as low as $15 and as high as $40 here. I think its worth it, though Stewie doens't have one yet. |
I live in Minnesota and I took Remy to Petsmarts vet in the store -Banfield I think the name is and I paid $29.99 to have him chipped. I agree you should shop around. Maybe you can check a shelter to see if they do it? |
I decided against it aswell, in UK we had a problem with people trying to cut the chip out themselves if they had stolen the dog :( Then it turns out that a vet cant legally give the adress of the person with your dog if they take it to a vet, you just get notified that yr dog has been found but you end up not knowing where crazy  |

i got mine done for free........... i think the cancer thing is a myth, i looked it up a loooooooooooong time ago and couldnt find anything of the sort, and i asked my vet and he just chuckled......... |
My adult girls and pups have their microchips . I began this method when Heidi ( one of my puppies ) have had a severe infection after been tattooed by a vet assistant ) . |
I think I might get Piper microchipped just in the off chance that we get separated (I'd lose my mind) he MIGHT be returned to me easier. Here if you have them micro-chipped you also pay a one-time fee for dog licensing and then you never have to worry about purchasing the dog license ever again. Sounds like a good idea to me!! |
I am going to get mine Microchipped when I get them spay and neutered. I think its worth it. |
I think it's worth it. I'm probably gonna have it done to Rika at some point though I couldn't give you an estimate on what it costs here. |
My Yorkie Coty has been missing since May 13th. I had initially decided not to microchip him and my other dog Tyson because I thought if they got loose the person that had him wouldn't necessarily take him to the vet to "find" the owner. As heartbroken as I am, I can't say that I would in fact have my pets chipped today because the person that picked my pet up still hasn't returned him despite flyers everywhere and a $1,000 reward, so the fact that he might have been microchipped probably wouldn't play a factor in this evil person's thought process. I do applaud the vet that scans any new patients to see if they are microchipped! After this incident with my dog, you can best believe that I am working on how to remedy the problem of reuniting lost pets with their owners. |

I am considering microchipping also for Indy. He is to be neutered Aug 1 and I want to get him PA lifetime dog license. I have the choice of microchipping or tattooing. I talked to my vet about it and she gave me a couple things to think about. She said that it is possible for the chips to migrate from the injection site, plus, like someone else said, they could be removed by someone who would find your dog. A tattoo is more permanent, couldn't be removed as easily. I already have 2 of my dogs tattooed and never had a problem with them. Still trying to decide..... |
I am upset with myself because I forgot to get Maddie microchipped when she was spayed. I've heard it can be painful if they aren't under at the time. I would really like to do it for peace of mind and hopefully, sometime when I have her at the vet, I will remember to ask. Tartisst...I'm so sorry to hear about your missing yorkie. Don't give up hope...some pets are reunited with their owners after months...or even years. My heart goes out to you...missing your little one and worrying and wondering. I hope Coty finds his way home to you! |
Okay...I have a ridiculous question so forgive me..... Do the vets tatoo in a "visible" area, say tummy or inside the leg, or is it hidden in an area that will ultimately be covered with hair? |
Sunshine came to me already microchipped. They insert it between the shoulders. When I took her to my vet, he copied the number onto her records. My vet told me that there are different types of chips and they aren't all compatible. That is my chip might not read at another vets office if he is set up for a different kind of chip. I guess it's similar to MP3's and WMA's, both digital audio but different. |

My vet did it for $30. You can take it to ASPCA and they will do it less than $100. I think it is worth it. |
Spca I had both my boys chipped when they were neutered. It cost $10 per dog (also had my cat done) and then it is $40 for lifetime registration for up to 8 animals. I definitely think that it is worth it. I know if someone finds them there is no guarantee, but it gives me peace of mind to some extent. Had them done at the SPCA as well as their surgery. Great vets, latest anesthia and inexpensive. |
My vet does scan new patients.....well, toys anyway..Rhey have 2 scanners but neither of them read my German-born Biewers...Does anyone have any stats about how many adverse reactions vets have had compared to the number of chips they have put in.. |
I just came across this info about Microchips....VERY IMPORTANT!!! MICROCHIP ALERT!!! PetsMart/Banfield Animal Hospitals across the country are injecting dogs with a new microchip that cannot be read by the standard microchip scanner used for HomeAgain and Avid microchips. Thus, if a dog is lost and found by a shelter or Animal Control Officer, and they scan with the normal microchip readers, the chip will not be read by the scanner. This can be a disaster if a shelter recieves a dog and they are not able to detect the implanted microchip. Very few shelters have the scanner that is needed to scan PetsSmarts microchips. Multiple lawsuits have been filed sueing Banfield Animal Hospitals for deceptive business practices, false advertising, and misleading customers. All pet owners should check to see if their local shelters have scanners to read the PetSmart/Banfield microchips if they had one implanted. |
Tara, thanx for that warning. I don't go there but a lot of people do. |
