Sophie LOVES food. all food. human food. dog food. she's very greedy. basically, she goes crazy if someone is eating. cries and pitches a fit. she is 10 weeks old. i have NEVER fed my dog table food. my question is, is this normal? how does she know to be so infatuated with human food if she's never had it?? |
Its a smell thing, what you need to do is teach your dog don't touch this. Get either a water bottle or a empty coffee can filled with a few coins. Take your food and put it on a plate on the floor, put the pup on the floor and as soon as she shows interest either spray with the water or shake the can. After a few times she will associate your food with the uncomfortable experience, it does not hurt them, and it is a good teaching aid. I can sit with Milo on my lap and eat my food and he will not go near it. Good Luck |
i wold love to be able to hold sophie while i eat, but she tries to get my food off of my plate or out my mouth, so i have to put her down. hopefully if i try this, the situation will change. thank you so much for the advice |
Layla is in her crate whenever someone eats. This just lets her know we are "alpha" and while we eat.. she needs to respect it... |
Make sure you never feed her from your plate or while you are eating unless you want a very persistent begger. :) I don't recommend table scraps because many times they have condiments, seasonings, high sodium, or high fat...BUT healthy people food is great! You can feed her real food *after* you eat and only on her own food plate/bowl. This will help :) |

but i don't feed her table food. she discovered begging on her own. we usually just avoid her when we eat and she begins her begging. we got sophie when she was so young, i can't imagine her breeder would have feed her table food. but it's not always table food. she just LOVES to eat. i took her to the vet, and there was a small piece of a dog biscuit on the floor. she cried and was trying to wiggle free to get it, i felt so embarassed, i bet the vet thought i abuse my puppy and don't feed her :( and when she eats, she eats so fast. so coughs and burps all the time. i'm confused. |
One thing I also discovered that helped is called an amaza ball. I know Petco carries them. I feed Milo his food in it. It is a round ball that dispenses food. Of course this will only work if you feed dry kibble. You place the meal in the ball and they have to work with the ball to get the food out and it only dispenses a few pieces at the time. Not only does this slow the eating down but it uses excess energy. |

I'm not suggesting you overfeed her though. Most dogs will eat themselves sick if we were to let them. |
