Hi..I'm new here with a Yorkie puppy Hi everyone, My family and I adopted a 9 month old Yorkie male Romeo. We've had him for 2 weeks now. He was neutered on Wednesday and seems to be recovered from it and very active. We are new to dog ownership and were pleased at first that Romeo would stay in his crate overnight, and seemed to by potty trained. However, he began marking in the house and the vet advised us to keep him leashed and crated at all times where we couldn't watch him to prevent this behavior. We've tried to do that, but he still manages an occasional marking. Now that he is feeling better after the neutering, he seems to be more rambunctious than ever and we've noticed his penis sticking out whenever we touch him, no matter how lightly. My son was holding him earlier today and I noticed it, and it happened a couple of other times since. We never noticed this prior to his being neutered. Also, Romeo is biting our ankles worse than he did before. Because the weather is so cold here right now, it's hard to get him out for exercise beyond a quick walk. We do throw balls in the house and play with him, etc. We were told to use a spray bottle with water in it because he doesn't know the word "No" yet. His former owner was at work all day and he was left alone in the house. It's helping a little but he's not really learning from his mistakes. Does this sound like normal Yorkie stuff to you? Any advice, ideas or suggestions? Also, he looks and smells like a mangy mutt most of the time. We have bathed him twice since he was here but are afraid to do more because we were told once a week was the maximum. Any ideas on grooming and bathing tips to keep him looking neater and smelling better? If I try to brush him, he bites the brush and my hand like crazy. We love him, but we are unsure if we are doing the right thing for him. Thanks! Carol |
Just wanted to say hello and welcome to YorkieTalk! :) |
Hi and welcome. I am not much help with your questions but there are lots of knowledgable posters here . Looking forward to seening pics of your new baby too. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! Sorry, I'm not much help with the questions either. Good luck with you little guy. I hope you are able to post some pics of him. |
Hi! Welcome to YT! You're gonna love it here! Can't help with your questions, but I'm sure someone with help will be here real soon! |
Welcome to YT. I KNOW you will get some answers soon because there are lots of knowledgable people on here...I'm just not one of them. Maybe he is just getting used to his new home and being neutered. Instead of the spray bottle, try shaking a can with coins in it when he bites your ankles. |
Welcome to YT! hehe mine loves to bite my ankles, and my fingers when I pet him, I hope someone can answer because I'd love to know if a spray bottle works. |
welcome YT and WHERE ARE THE PICS OF YOUR BABY!!! of course we want to see the little baby dog!;) |
Usually, it's better to get them neutered around 5-6 mos. but, I see where you just got him recently..I've never had that problem with my male, so really don't know what to tell you on the little penis problem..usually neutering will stop the marking, give it time, since he just had the surgery..Also, if he has stitches, he shouldn't be bathed until the stitches have been removed..My son just had his male neutered a month ago, and the vet told him not to get the stitches wet. We had an obedience trainer for our 2 outside dogs, he said you could use water mixed with vinegar and spray in the face when you tell him no..it may sting a little, but, it won't hurt him. good luck on your new little guy |
Welcome to YT! There are lots of knowledgeble people here (I don't consider myself one of them, I'm usually the one asking the questions  ) I have a little girl so I can't help you with the penis thing, sorry! Most yorkies do seem to need baths quite frequently. If Madeleine doesn't get a bath every week she looks a mess! Maybe you could take him to an obedience class. They could work on the biting and learning what no is. Good luck with Romeo and keep reading, you will learn so much :p |
:welcome4: Just wanted to say hi! Sorry, I can't help with you issues!:( |
Just wanted to say HI and Welcome! |
:wavey: Welcome to YT!! Glad to have you here. If you're going to hang out with us :) - you'll have to sign Romeo up for our Little Gentleman's Club, you can do so here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=gentleman O Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore Art Thou Romeo? ;) Yes, we want to see him!! :p |
Welcome to YT. I have never had a male pet so I can't help you with the penis problem, but if you get a belly band it will help with the marking until he's fully potty trained. They do not take the place of training, but if you can't get to him fast enough, it prevents a mess. My husband plays with my girl and allows her to bite (playfully) but it is only allowed with him. If she tries to play like that with anybody else, we firmly say NO, and she stops. This took training of course, he will get it, just be patient, and give him lots of love and rewards. He will do fine. As far as the brushing, my sister has a bigger dog that hates to be brushed and will growl and nip. She tried to talk very softly to him telling him that it's ok and hes a good boy, IT WORKED! Couldn't believe it! He's older though, I think 2 years. Start by brushing him for just 30 seconds and then praise him up and give him a treat, increase the time slowly, and before you know it, he will be use to the brush / comb. Until then, you could consider a shorter cut, but still work on getting him use to the comb. I'm not an expert by any means, so these are just suggestions, I hope it works for you. Would love to see pictures. |
Hi..I'm new here with a Yorkie puppy Hi everybody! Thanks for the friendly welcome to Romeo and me! I appreciate the tips and I will definitely try them. As we speak, he's sitting on my daughter's lap chewing a bone and behaving well. We are going to try the coffee can with coins when he starts to bite our feet. He's really such a sweetheart but never having trained a pet before, I'm a little out of my league. I'll keep everyone posted and send pics asap. I'll also sign him up for the gentlemen's club. how cute! hugs, Romeo and his mom Carol |
hi & welcome to yt :D |

LOL as for the penis problem,, i've heard of some who have such a problem,, with various treatments,, i'd check with your vet for their best advice,, as for the rest,, sounds like a YORKIE!! LOL,, Patience,, lots of reading up,, Patience,, lots of attention and PATIENCE!!! LOL,, good luck,, look forward to seeing the new puppy soon!!:aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
Give him time with the "no biting." Along with sharp "no" I also gave a high pitched yelp. Neither of the boys liked that sound. The poster that suggested belly bands had a terrific idea. It may take awhile since he was neutered at an older age, but he will learn. Now humping is another thing. I have two boys, 1 yr. and the other 8 mo. At least they stop when I say "no.":D Joanne :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :dog: |
Hi..I'm new here with a Yorkie puppy 1 Attachment(s) Ok, here he is...introducing Romeo...he's quite a lover boy...lol He also loves to fetch, which I'm so happy about because my whole life I dreamed of having a dog that would fetch and I didn't think Yorkies were "fetchers" but we needed a small dog to fit with our lifestyle, so I had to compromise. Lo and behold, he's a fetcher! In this pic, Romeo had found a ball in our yard and then proceeded to run 100mph laps around our yard with it in his mouth. He'd stop occasionally and look at me like "are you gonna chase me?" . So cute. I got my retriever in a small package. Carol |
Needing a little help Hello everyone, I am a first time yorkie owner and am needing a little help. My 14 wk old yorkie seems to be having some problems going to the bathroom. She is able to urinate but unable to poop. She was fine yesterday afternoon but last night began to struggle to go and has not gone since. This morning she is still trying to go without any success. She got sick about 30 mins ago and vomited and just does not seem to be feeling like herself she just wants to lay around and sleep and seems to be cold. Is there something wrong with her should I take her to the vet or is there something I can do to help her go potty? Any help is greatly appreciated I am worried about her. Thanks |
There are some very good books out there on Yorkies and Yorkie training. We had never had a Yorkie either, and I had never had much luck with training. However, patience is the key. We have a girl. The leash thing was good.. Ours was on a leash for nearly a year. We never let her out of our sight. She is six now, and she does pretty well. Best of luck to you. Yorkie's rule, as my husband says.;) |

Some might suggest some canned pumpkin - not the spiced stuff for pies |

Welcome! Welcome to Yorkie Talk! I'm new to this site too (3weeks) and I can honestly say there's a lot of great information and advice to find here. My Yorkie is 12 wks old and is a real ankle biter as well. I try and distract him whenever he starts chewing on something he shouldn't with something he CAN chew on. Nylabones work well!!! Keeping an eagle-eye on him at all times is hard but necessary, especially if he had little or nor training with his last owner. If I can't watch him, he has to be in a kennel or at the very least his playpen. Don't let him have the run of the house. Once they pee somewhere and get away with it they think it's o.k. for the future. Take him outside or put him on a piddle pad as soon as your done playing with him. He is my third dog and trust me: it will get better with age! Just be patient with him and have fun!!! Dogs are soooooo much fun!:welcome4: |
