Fritzel is acting different I adopted Fritzel about 15 months ago. He has only really liked me and tolerates my husband. He never liked being picked up or sitting in my lap. Well recently he has been pretty needy. He wants to sit in my lap, even begs to get picked up. When he does get in my lap, he shakes a lot, and pants heavy, but he does not seem afraid. This is NOT like him. Well my stepdaughter came to visit today and he has been in her room most of the day. He has always ran from her and my son. My husband thinks Fritzel just realizes he likes all the attention. But I am worried something is wrong with him. He is just not acting like himself. What do you think? Am I worrying for nothing? |
He is a darlin... I am not sure when your kids will be leaving but if he is use to getting all the attention that may be the only thing ... Give it a little time and see if things change when he gets back to a normal schedule ....These little ones are set in their ways and the least little interuption in their schedule can make a world of difference... Hope it is nothing more... Have A Great Saturday Hugs Vicki |
My son lives here all the time and Fritzel has always been terrified of him. He has tried to make friends with him. I think a boy must have hurt him in the past. My stepdaughter came last night and is leaving Monday. But Fritzel has been acting different for about a week. |
That may very well be it.... I definitely do not have experience in this area and commend you for rescuing this baby! I would say if all else fails resort to the vet.. Try giving him some one on one time in a room where it is just you and him and see if maybe that will work.. Try a new toy .. Sometime they get bored... Try new treats but by all means keep us posted and stay around more will read this and may be able to offer more advice! Vicki |
The panting and heavy breathing concern me. Since this is a recent behavior change, I think I'd check in with the vet. It may be an indicator that something is going on with your baby's health. Good luck and please update when you can. |
The panting bothers me too. Dogs sometimes do this when they are in pain...:( Does he only do it once he gets up on your lap? my collie does this when she has to go potty REALLY bad, could it be that? |
I hope that this is just a sign that he has finally relaxed in your home and is opening up to the human bonding... However, I do believe that a trip to the vet will ease your mind enough to relax you. If they find something wrong, it is best to catch it sooner than later. (((Hugs))) to you... keep us updated, we care! |
He does seem to do the shaking and panting mostly when he wants to go out. When he wants on my lap I ask him if he wants to go out and usually he does. I don't know why he would do this behavior now though. Usually he just barks and runs to the door. |
Fritzel is a very handsome boy!! How old was he when you adopted him 15 months ago? If he was a little older you may just be seeing him finally adjusting to his skin family. Also, I'm not a expert but I think all dogs go thru phases. If he's panting see what the vet finds. If nothing's wrong I say enjoy the time together and hope it lasts! |
He may be trying to tell you that something is going on with him..Dogs can't communicate like we do...Out of normal panting is a sign of pain, discomfort, etc. |
He was 2 yrs old when I got him. I am going to call the vet tomorrow to make an appointment. I am going to have him checked for Lyme disease first. He was covered with ticks when I got him and the vet tested him. He was negative but they said to test him again later in case it didn't show up yet. He is laying around a lot. I have seen other dogs with Lyme disease and he is acting similiar. |
Well Fritzel went to the vet today. He tested negative for Lyme. His bloodwork all came back okay. She said he is probably just arthritic due to his broken bones he had before. She gave him Rimadyl to take for a week. So I feel better that all his bloodwork checked out okay. |
