Is it the right time for my Penny?
 

Hi,
This is the first time I have posted; until recently I had 2 Yorkies Girls Penny aged 10 and Tara aged 8, tragically we lost Tara 2 Months ago with Kidney Disease (God Bless Her) We bought her to give penny some doggy company it took months for penny to accept Tara, The 2 Dogs had been best friends for 7 years Penny misses Tara terribly and still looks for her every day, My dilemma is would it be advisable to home another Yorkie at this stage, bearing in mind how old penny is, would she accept another Yorkie:confused: looking for some advice.

First of all, my condolences for your loss of Tara. It is hard on everyone to lose a beloved friend of 8 years.
As far as getting another...being right for Penny? The age factor isn't a problem I wouldn't think and given time and patience I would suppose she would be accepting of a new friend. I presently have 3 yorkies. Before I got my first one, we had a older cocker spaniel mix breed (probably 10-11 when I brought the first yorkie home). Alphie (the older dog) sniffed a little at the new guy, grumbled at him some, and maybe shunned the little guy for awhile but before long they were good friends and played together alot. I believe having the youngster around helped Alphie to act/feel younger again and helped keep him around for the next 4 years. We lost Alphie this last November at 14 years of age. He was here and accepting of my first yorkie and my second...I believe having them here for companionship was truely good for him. Good luck in your decision.:)

My shih tzu is almost 10, and we just brought Ginger home back in October(have 2 other inside ones besides these 2) and the shih tzu is fine with it..doesn't have much to do with them, unless she wants to play and initiates it..that's up to you, don't think your little girl will probably care one way or the other

I am sorry about Tara. We had a Lhasa Apsa named Wendy and last summer we thought that she wouldn't make it through the year because she was 14. Sasha was two and we thought that since we would probably lose Wendy in a year or two that we should get another yorkie for Sasha to get to know before we lost Wendy, so we got Jasmine. Well, last month we had to put Wendy down because her front legs were not working. We don't regret getting Jasmine at all because she helped Wendy get through until we could shcedule the day that Wendy would get put down. Jasmine also has helped Sasha get through Wendy being gone. Sometimes they snuggle in Wendy's favorite pet bed together and sleep, which they didn't do before Wendy died. So I think that it would be a good idea to get another yorkie.:rolleyes:

So sorry to hear of your loss. I suspect you miss Tara as much as Penny does. I think it would be great if you got a new friend for Penny.....they all need a 'dog-buddy'. Have you thought of maybe trying to find an older Yorkie? Puppies can be trying on some older dogs. And to anyone reading this thread...chronic kidney disease is the leading cause of premature death in dogs (all breeds) and commercial foods with fillers is the biggest contributor to this. Please, everyone, there is no dry dog food sold in a grocery store that is 'good' for your baby. A premium food will typically add more quality years to your baby's life. In the long run, premium foods are more economical (portion size is smaller per pound versus cheaper foods) and you will have less health problems. Those 'extra' vet visits aren't cheap either. There are many good brands available. Just google 'premium dog foods' and you will get lots of results. Some sites are very informative. You will be amazed at the difference between commercial and premium grade dog foods. While the protein, fiber and fat content numbers may be similar, lower quality foods use indigestible fillers (corn, wheat) to achieve these numbers and are the doggie equivalent of junk food. Sorry for the rant, it's just that I was shocked after doing some research. I was using Pedigree Small Breed at the time and immediately switched to a premium food. P.S.....my vet had said that the Pedigree Small Breed was fine. Needless to say, vets don't always have the best advice about everything. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :)

I'm so sorry for the loss of Tara. My sister and her husband brought a shih-tzu puppy home with their 11 year old dalmatian. Sinco LOVES the puppy!

He thinks he's the baby's mommy or something!
