I have not known a yorkie to be that itchy.. touch wood... I do not think I want to neither.. I have one of mine on omega 3 from the vet.. it helped her, but she was not as bad as what your are saying.. I will watch this thread for more interesting posts too... |
I agree with the posts that you should change foods. Even if that isn't the source of your baby's problem, you are using the wrong food. There is nothing in the grocery store that you should be feeding a Yorkie. Read the labels and stay away from corn and wheat. There are many good premium brands available; Royal Canin is one of the easiest to find (available at Petsmart). I personally use Drs. Foster & Smith. You can order it online. Remember that even though you will spend more on a premium food you will save yourself many expensive vet visits and will be doing what is best for your baby. I also avoid any chews that are made from rawhide as it is not digestible and will cause many problems. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
If the steroids are helping then it is most likely an allergy. Wellness (the one made with fish I think it is) would be a good food to try as long as it's not too rich for your dog. My first choice would be to homecook. I would probably go with fish or lamb as the protein, oatmeal, brown rice or potato as the carb and green beans, carrot or squash as the veggies. This would be good if you don't know what the allergen is. You would have to supplement though. Steroids are not really healthy long-term (or even short-term). Benadryl can also cause problems long-term. I would make sure it isn't the food before constanting giving steroids. You might have to give some for now to help Button's body get over this though. It can take up to sixty days after a food switch to see an improvement. So if the itchies don't go away right away, don't be surprised. My Yorkie had a terrible reaction to Royal Canin. She had to have a steroid shot and now it seems we can't quite get over the allergies. They are so frustrating. I have heard at least one report of some good coming out of blood allergy testing for food but there are a lot of false negatives. It is not anything I would do for food. An elimination diet is the only way to be sure. |
My Max was itching on a certain food and when i switched he stopped itching within a couple of days so i agree with the others the first thing i would do is change to a higher quality food. Hugs Mary |
Mine used to eat the caesars and even though dogs love it, it is the worse food for them and is especially so if they have allergies. They also gain weight on it. You can also find the better foods at feed stores |
my baby is always itchy Tricksie was itchy, switched her to Innova EVO and it stopped. Luckily I can get it at the local feed store. |
