housebreakin I am interesting in getting a yorkie and I have been reading in different web sites that it is almost impossiable to housebreak a yorkie. I had a yorkie about 4 years ago and he mostly stayed outdoors (he was the "standard" size yorkie and was about 13 lbs.) and when he did come inside he maybe only had an accident 3 times. This time around I want to get a smaller yorkie which will be kept inside full time.. so this question is important to me. Thanks everyone! Courtney |
housetraining I just got my first Yorkie 3 weeks ago. His name is Eddie and is doing well housebreaking on puppypads since I live in Canada and it is cold out we don't let him outside yet. I think the key is to be consistant and have lots of patience. He is great going pee and can go on demand but with the poops we have to watch him like a hawk and put him on the pads at the first sign of him having to go. If he doesn't go on the pads then it is our fault for not watching him. He usually goes about 10 minutes to 1/2 an hour after he eats. I think it is just persistance and lots of rewards and you shouldn't have too many problems.................Teigan |
I absolutely agree that being consistent is the key to it all and patience!! I personally have no idea why people say that a yorkie is hard to housetrain as I've had 4 of them and I'd say they are no harder than any other dog!! One minute you wonder if you are getting anywhere at all with the training and the next they are housetrained although it does take time of course LOL!! So I say get your yorkie and don't worry about it! Don't forget to tell us all about him/her!! |
i agree with everyone else..... and yorkies are no harder to housebreak than any other dog (and ive owned a fair few so far)...... they are a little harder to train (but it is not that they just 'dont get it' it is the fact that they have their own mind and do what they want to do, not necessarily what you want them to do)...... I would say you cant go wrong with a yorkie (this is only my first one, and i think i wont go back to golden retreivers...... lol........ or maybe i can have BOTH!!!) jk...... my fiance would kill me |
Yorkies are harder to housebreak, but not impossible. Bentley is 7 months old and is doing really well, he only has an accident every once in awhile and that is only when we don't take him out often enough. We never trained him on the pee-pad (kind of wish we did as temps are cold here in Seattle), but he does really well going outside. My parents have a yorkie and they had a lot harder time training him. One thing I did read in the yorkie books is that their organs are still developing until 6 months of age so don't have too high of expectations on potty training until then. |
I don't have experience with any other dogs, because Hercules is my first pet. But so far I think he's been doing ok in the housetraining department. But my expectations aren't very high right now, since he's only 4 months. It just takes a lot of work. If I'm not with Hercules, then he's in his kennel. Which means that if I'm home with him, then he's with me all the time. Just make sure that you have the time to spend most of your time with your yorkie if you decide to get one! I have no life, so it was ok with me!! :p |
