HELP Very Sleepy Yorkie! My yorkie just tuned a year and he is sleeping ALL the time!! I can barely get him out of bed to go for a walk... once we go walking/playing for about 20-30 minutes, right back into bed. I work from home, so I have really noticed a change in his energy. He comes out of his bed to eat and poop and that's all... I miss his mischievous ways. I called my vet and he said "well, he is not a puppy anymore." Yeah, but he is not 12 either! Is this normal? He is still eating high quality organic dog food, nothing else has changed, except for the fact that he had his 1st birthday. Missing my feisty Yorkie! |
Is he maybe depressed? I know they can get like that, just we do when we are down in the dumps... just a thought. |
My puppy is like that too. He's really lazy! but he's active around other dogs. Maybe your yorkie needs a doggy friend |
Honestly, I thought of that. I have been trying to take him to the dog park, on longer walks to the beach and buy him more brain teasing toys. He has tons of fun on the walk and plays with the other dogs, but as soon as he gets home from his walk and play time- straight to bed. I try to show him the new toys or do some obedience training... doesn't want to- straight to bed. I am getting depressed, thinking he is depressed :( Should I talk with my vet again? what do you do about doggie depression? |
You may want to have his thyroid checked. It can make you really tired if it is not working correctly. Has he gained any weight? |

Coby is a year old, and if I find him actually sleeping in his kennel without being sent there, I always worry that he's sick. I just know that's not his normal behavior. |

I would also most definately have his bile acids tested for liver disease. My Yorkie is 6 and while she enjoys her naps, she also spends a good share of her time bouncing off the walls. :) This doesn't sound normal.:( |
Thank you so much for the advice! Now that you mention it, I did notice some weight gain over the past few months, but also he still has the fluffy puppy hair, and it was growing longer, so I thought maybe it was that. This morning he threw up some bile, so I called and made an appointment with my vet for tomorrow morning. I will mention both the liver disease and thyroid. Thanks for the help! |
We definitley have "off" days, but it never lasts longer than 2 days I'd say. It's usually after a hard-playing weekend of fun though, monday and tuesday he just wants to lay around. |
