Kennel License? For those of you (us, lol) that have more than just a couple of furbabies, do you have a kennel license? It has always been the general belief around here that if you have more than 4 dogs, you need a license. I just found out (because I called my twp office) that the limit is 3, and you can only obtain more dogs and a license for breeding or showing purposes. I can understand it to an extent, but look at all the shelter dogs out there. If someone has a couple of acres of land and can give a dog a good home, they cannot have more than 3 dogs unless its for breeding? I know they are trying to prevent animal hoarding, but my dogs are under 10 lbs a piece! My neighbor could have several hundred lbs of great danes, and I cannot have 4 10 lb dogs? So I did not let them know that I have 4. My neighbors dont complain, I live on a dirt road, and I have 2 1/2 acres. I want another yorkie too, LOL. I take good care of my animals, I think that should be all that matters. |
Here the limit is 4 dogs in a household... A friend actually did breed and had 7 dogs. She had to rehome 3 of them. Someone reported her... |
where i grew up was out in the "country" and they never said anything about how man dogs people had but they also never said anything when people add 1000+ sq feet to their home either (i.e. permits...) so I think as long as you have good neighbors...hopefully they wont say anything! |
Kennel License I have a license here. I can have 7 dogs, (which I do have) but I told them at the time that I work in rescue and there would be no breeding here. (2.5 acres fully fence) |
I think it just depends on where you live. I hear here (in the city nonetheless) that you can have TWELVE! :eek: |
I "think" in Phoenix there is NO LIMIT. Wierd. I can have as many horses as I want tho..... |
city limits Ok... I don't know about where most of ya'll live but where I have lived in the past the limit for dogs only applies to city limits, if you are in the country w/ land it shouldn't apply. |
I live in Texas, way out in the country, and there is not limit. I know there is a limit if you live in some of the big cities. |

I hate city limits! Like you said, I understand it to an extent. I live in a townhouse so we don't have all the room in the world, or a huge yard but I definitly would have room for one more little yorkie, but our city limit is only 2. Our neighbor has 2 bigger dogs, not sure what kind, but their townhouse is a lot smaller then ours and I honestly wonder if they ever trip over the dogs! The living rooms alone in that style barely fit up to 4 people comfortably! |
I think it is so ignorant for a city to decide how many pets someone is allowed to have...that's no different than telling someone how many children they can have :mad: Here it is no more than 4 cats or dogs combined. I have three (right now 4 with Rylie)...I really don't care what the city says though...if I wanted more right now, I'd have them. No one really checks here anyway. |
I am at this point 3 animals over our town limit, and honestly it worries me because I don't want to have to worry about anyone telling me that I have to rehome one of my babies. I'm 2 dogs and 1 cat more then the quota. My cat is an indoor cat and no one would ever know she even lived here, however my 2 yorkie babies are the 2 that the town doesn't know about. I was thinking about looking into a kennel liscense so that they were here legally but have no idea what is involved in that. I really am interested in possibly showing Yorkies down the road and I would probably end up starting a breeding program as well so I know I would have more then our limits at that point as well. |

I have a little bit of experience in this area. I found out I was one over the limit after I had already got her and went to register. I was also told you are not allowed a kennel license within city limits. There are zoning laws that prevent kennel limits from being given in the city so there isn't a way around the limit (at least here). I am always extremely nervous about someone saying something about me being over by one and it's a constant stressor. The neighborhood is pretty dog friendly but one of my neighbors is not... |
