How to choose a puppy
 
I've put a deposit down on a female Yorkie from a litter of 5 girls and 1 boy. I've gotten 3 different batches of pictures from the breeder. The puppies are only 19 days old right now.

This morning the breeder was asking me if there was a certain puppy that I wanted to claim as mine. I don't feel comfortable making that decision right now and told her I'd like to wait to see them in person. I've been promised first pick, since I put my deposit down first and have been in contact with her since 3 weeks before they were born.

How do I decide? What should I look for? I tend to be drawn to the darker Yorkies. Is there a way to tell which ones will be darker? With that said, I'm not interested in getting the smallest one, as size won't be a factor in my decision. I really just want it to be healthy and of good temperment. If it were a sure thing, I'd take a purple one if it were healthy, happy and good fit for our family! ;) I know whichever one we pick, we'll love it.

What age should the puppy be when I make my final decision? I can see them in person weekend after next. (they will be 4 weeks old then)

There's a 1 year health guarantee on the puppies.

Hello there, congratulations on your puppy :). From what I have learnt, a puppy with good temperament should be something in the middle of a pack meaning the puppy should possess a temperament that is in the middle out of all the puppies in the batch. The puppy shouldn't be overtly timid nor overtly brave. When you carry the puppy on its back, puppy should not be staring in to your eyes for very long and does not squirm hard for too long of a time. Also, some people used coins in cans to test the reactions of the puppies. The best reaction is when the puppy would be curious to see what is happening but is not too timid nor should it be charging. It is okay if they come check the can out out of curiosity. I hope this helps! The last time I looked for a puppy, mine was okay, just a little on the timid side but with a lot of socialization he turns out fine. I did have a lot of time back then to socialize him. My sister who wanted a playful naughty puppy got just what she wanted. She was the most hyper one in the batch and she charge at us (always the first) when we were there but she is happy with her dog because she likes a cheerful naughty little one.

Pick one who's not to shy but not too pushy. Watch them play. See if it will let you turn it belly up and touch different parts of her without her getting upset. Call her or pat the floor and see which one comes to you. You really should visit a couple of times and observe. It will be really hard to choose at only 4 weeks.

I dont think you can really predict their color t such a young age. I would suggest just see which one you have the most fun with, which one seems to like you the most. I knew that Chewy and I would be perfect together right when I held her in my arms for the first time. She started licking me all over and I havent let her go ever since.

Im sure youll have a connection with at least one of them right away and see if the breeder will let you come back a few times. If youre taking your baby home at 8 weeks...maybe try to mke the decision by 6-7 weeks. that way youll get to know their personality a little more.

I like to let the puppy pick me out, when possible...are you close enough by where you could go see them in another week or so?

I am a newbie and appreciate all the info. that I have gained on yorkietalk! I am currently on a waiting list for a my first yorkie pup.

I was told by a reputable breeder that yorkie pups personalities / temperaments start to develope at eight weeks old.

When I pick I will visit for several times and not make a decision until the pup/s are at least eight weeks.

I also would see a puppy in person because connection is everything. When I picked Maxi I spotted him miles away and he did too. It was a love at first sight. Pick the one that you have the most bond with. I heard that you are not suppose to pick a nervous puppy because they might have neurological problems later on. Good luck :)

IF ONE PARENT IS LIGHT AND ONE IS DARK LOOK FOR THE PUP WITH THE DARKEST GOLD TONE AND THAT COLOR SHOULD STAY DARK AND LOOK FOR THE GOLD HAIRS ON TOP OF THE HEAD WHEN THE HAIRS ARE PARTED GOOD INDICATION THAT THE PUPS COLOR WILL STAY DARK.((JUST WHAT i HAVE FOUND TO BE TRUE))

MY BOY WAS DARK GOLD AT WHEN I GOT HIM AND HE IS A BEAUTIFUL MEDIUM GOLD NOW AND AT ALMOST 2 JUST LOOKING TO CHANGE TO THE DEEP STEEL BLUE HOPE THIS HELPS

Yes, I will be able to visit them a few times before she comes home. The breeder is 30-45 mins. away.

I had also heard not to pick the first one that runs up to you or the one that hangs back or acts scared. So I guess it's true! :)

There's one puppy that has a lot more black on it than the others, I'm wondering if it will have more black as it matures? I know there's really no way to tell. Both parents are both light, so I might end up with a light little girl. That will be fine.

I'm so excited to go see them!

Where did you hear not to pick the first pup that runs to you? I thought the first one that runs to you will be a hyper naughty one. I mean if you dont want that then yeah dont pick that one :) I love hyper ones that's why I picked Maxi he was the first one who ran to me :) Good luck. The puppies on the photos are so adorable! :)

I read it first online, then that's what I thought everyone was saying above.

My little Peanut was really active and we loved him to pieces! (He's the sweetie in my avatar)
I'd love a little girl that's sort of middle of the road. She's gonna be my cuddle baby.

I have MS and when I'm really pooped out or not feeling well, it's nice to have that little warm body to cuddle up with. :)

Maxi is a dolly baby!

I will never let go one of my puppies to a person unless the pup chose this person . I never had someone returning a pup .

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean?

I don't think I could EVER return a puppy! EVER!
Even with a 1 year health guarantee, if the pup were sick, I wouldn't take it back.
