New Yorkie Family Hello! This is my first time on. This is our first time to have an inside pet and I have been amazed at how well it is going. I am a stay at home mom and I home school my 14 year old daughter. We bought the puppy for her CHRISTmas present. However, it didn't take long for our little Sophie Mae to steal all our hearts. She has proven to be very smart and house training is going amazingly well. She is so sweet and keeps us laughing all the time. When my husband gets home from work she goes crazy for him. My daughter and I think she likes him more than she does either of us. He has turned into an "old softy". I never thought I'd see the day that my husband would cuddle up with a puppy the way he does "Sophie Mae". I am wondering about a few things. First, I am shocked at how much she has grown. We took her for her first vet visit when she was 9 weeks old and she weighed 2.6. We took her back at 14 weeks and she weighed 5.2. How much should I expect her to weigh when she is full grown? Her parents were 6 and 7 pounds. She is now 16 weeks old. The vet gave us vitamins for her but the book I purchased on Yorkies said vitamins were not necessary if she was getting a balanced diet. Should we be giving her the vitamins? Also, how much should we be feeding her in total for the day. We feed her three times a day. She didn't have a very thick coat of hair when we got her but I have noticed that the hair on her feet has gotten very thin. Is this normal? She has no skin problems. She has been given a thorough examination from the vet twice since we got her. She is very healthy. |
Welcome! I would say shes at least gong to be as big as her parents at 7 lbs maybe bigger. Some yorkies have thinner coats and some have thicker coats. A thinner coat usually means a silky coat. Vitamins arent necessary if they are eating a balanced diet. Some people do give fish oil though because its good for the skin and coat. |
I am not expert enough for answers, but can say welcome and she's a cutie/keeper. |
Hi And welcome YT I have never given my Yorkies vitamins. Sadie is 18 weeks old so we both got Christmas puppies....Congrats on your new baby! We all love to see pics so she her off to us! I just started free feeding, where her food is down all the time so she can eat when she wants. I have an expen so she can have her bed, toys, a pee pad, and her food and water in the pen with her when I am not home. That way I don't have to worry if I will be back in time to feed her.... Here's a growth chart for your baby... convert the pounds into oz and you can follow the chart down to where she will wind up! http://www.YorkiePassion.com/ It sounds like your baby might be a bit on the bigger side. Sadie just gained 8 oz in two weeks and now weighs 3 pounds! I was surprised at how much she gained. The growth chart worked perfectly for Chewy my older yorkie but for Sadie I think it could be off cause it says she will be 4-5 pounds and if she is gaining like this she will be bigger also. I love her to death and what ever she is she is. My husband hated small dogs till he met Chewy. Now he is crazy for them and they love him to death...I know what you mean about when he walks in the door! ;) |
