have I made a good decision? My Blossom is 6 mos. old today and I made an appointment to have her spayed Feb. 26 but I was not sure if it should be postponed till I don't know when. The reason why is because she's been having some neurological problems with jerking and shaking. At least that's what my vet said. She been making these motions for some time now. She had a bile acid test which came out normal and her urine was checked for crystals to make sure the liver is healthy. My vet has recommended I take her to a neurologist which I will do when he says the time is right. We have to see what develops, if it gets worse, stays the same or even goes away as she grows. Right now he's not sure an MRI or a cat scan will pick up anything because it is so subtle. My question is do you think it's a good idea to have her spayed without this neurological exam being done first. He says it would be okay, the worst that could ever happen is that she have a seizure on the table that lasts for more than 30 seconds to a minute and he can't bring her out of it. Even though it's a frightening thing for me to think of, I haven't seen her have anything that lasts for more than a second. I went ahead and scheduled the spay I think mostly just to get it over and out of the way with and then we can concentrate on this jerking and shaking thing hoping it doesn't get any worse. I love my puppy so much and I only want to do what's good for her. Am I doing the right thing? All this is so heavy on my mind and a hard thing to deal with. Thanks for any help on this. |
Although I don't have the answer to your question, I just wanted to say that I understand your concern. It is always hard to think of them going in for that surgery without other complications to consider. I'm not sure what I would do in your situation either. I will keep you and your baby in my thoughts. :) |
i would do the neuro consult first. See what they say about going under anesthesia at a regular vet. Her shaking may be something big or it may be something small. either way i'd want to know before she went in for surgery. if she has a more serious condition i'd have any surgeries performed by a board certified surgeon. They are more knowledgeable and have a lot more technology, experience, machines, and drugs there to treat any problems that may arise. |
I'm so terribly sorry that little Blossom is having problems. I, like you, felt that Toto should be spayed as soon as she reached 6 months. Sadly, she also had to weigh at least 2 lbs., which she did not. Our vet assured us that in the little tiny ones, like Toto, it was OK to wait a little longer. She didn't weigh 2 lbs. until she was 8 months old, at which point, she was spayed. Is your vet concerned about sedating her with the symptoms she exhibits? I don't know a lot about these things, I was just curious. Please keep us updated on Blossom and I will certainly be keeping her in my prayers. |
I would wait... I would not take a chance, the last thing you need to do is sweat this out on top of the worry about your babies other testing. |
I would wait. It would be best to do the neuro exam now and if she needs two procedures done at once, it could be done at the same time. That way she would only have to be under anesthesia once. |
