Choosing an older puppy I've been looking for another female, and I have really only been looking at puppies that are four months minimum, but preferably six months old. At six months definitely, but even at four months, you can determine their coloring, looks, and size. Are there any cons to this, to choosing an older puppy? |

I got one of mine at 5 months & he has been absolutely wonderful from day one. His breeder had been planning to show him. He'd run him on as he had high hopes for him, having kept him from the first litter he'd bred using an American champion that he'd recently imported, but he'd grown just a little too tall. So, apart from being that bit too tall for his liking, he was a beautiful little dog. He'd had all his inoculations so I could take him out everywhere straight away & he walked beautifully on a lead. Although he'd spent most of his short life in a puppy pen he house trained really quickly. He was clean overnight from the beginning & got the idea of going into the garden during the day within the month. And although he was older when he came to me he has become the most loving of all my dogs, he never leaves my side if he can help it. I think perhaps he craved the love after being one of many. His breeder looked after him well, don't get me wrong, but the attention he got was all grooming & show training whereas he's a little dog who craves close companionship. So I'd say no, there are no cons. You can virtually know what sort of dog yours will be, less likely to get any surprises health or temperament wise, & you can go out & about together straight away. |
2 Attachment(s) I got my first Yorkie at 6 months too, and it was wonderful! No cons! He too followed me everywhere I went and had no issues whatsoever. He literally took 5 minutes to potty train -- I swear in his 11 years he never had an accident (I loved him a lot can you tell :-) His coloring actually still changed quite a bit over the years. He was pretty dark when I brought him home and ended up a beautiful silver. (the pictures attached are from 1997 at about 8 months old and then 2004) |
I got Pixie at 13 months, some issues with housebreaking, Dixie was 6 month and easily fit in with the gang. Unfortunately she had congenital kidney failure and passed on, I just got Roxie at 4 months and she has been pretty easy to fit in,but I prefer them to be 6 months old. You can get a real good idea of what they will look like, and a few months less of the chewing stage. |
i got my Gracie at almost 8 months old..no problems and she fit right in like she's known us forever!!! |
Chip was a rescue at 1.5 yrs (one year ago), and Harley came here at about age 2. They both have worked out great, I love them to death:) When I was looking for a brother for Chip, I was looking for one around his age and same size so I only looked at young adults. |
I got 2 of my babies that were older, No problems at all:) I think its better sometimes that way;) good luck to you:D |
i got lola at 7 months, i had no problem at all, she changed color around 11 months |
I got my little maltese when she was 7 months old, and the transitions was great! She was already spayed and potty trained. She bonded with us quickly. I would not hesitate to do that again :) Good luck in your search!! Many times, show breeders will have a pup available at that age that they may have decided not to show. |
