A Grooming Table or ???? Since my last my post, I've acquired a 1.7 kg. Yorkie and 1.5 kg. Maltese, so I'm up to 4 furbabies. I live in a remote southern Mexico town and there are no groomers within hundreds of miles, so I decided to try it on my own. Friends gave me a mail order grooming arm and a local carpenter made a table to my specifications. The day the carpenter arrived with the table, my housekeeper was the only one at home. I had explained to her how the arm worked and she and the carpenter set it up. The carpenter took a long look and asked, "Does the Senora hang dogs here?" My housekeeper replied with a straight face, "I really don't know." This really happened and I hesitate to use the same carpenter again. LOL. Hope you got as big a kick from this true story as I did. |
LOL!!! Oh my goodness..... |
Oh dear, I did chuckle... yet it's a little scary at the same time. |
I've been grooming my baby since she was a baby.....never used a grooming table.....don't like the "noose" hanging down. I'm always very cautious when I use the hair dryer or clippers that the cord doesn't hang down in front of her, because if she fell while I was working on her, she would hang herself. I just put her on the bathroom sink....easy....never had any close calls in her nine years. |
Is it hard to learn to groom them? I groom mine to a point I do not cut their nails, or shave their bottoms because I am afraid of cutting to close. I bathe mine and brush them every day, and then once a month I take them to the groomers, I would like to start doing it from home but not sure. Just like to know how hard or easy is it to do myself. |
I have been doing it for nine years now. Just do it a little at a time....it takes me a long time, but at least I know she is comfortable with me doing it and no one is going to hurt her. I keep her body hair short (with clippers) and her face, legs and tail are longer, and I use scissors on those parts. Just be careful.....there are plenty of posts on here about grooming. Just do a search and you'll come up with plenty of hints to help you with. Good luck! |
lol too funny, thanks for sharing. |
I do the basic grooming myself and use a tiny electric razor made for sideburns for the ears and around the bottom. As far as trimming the nails, I usually have a friend hold 'em still and don't take off too much. As I said, there are no real groomers anywhere close to me, so it's been trial and error to learn. You Tube has some grooming videos. Even if I do mess up, the hair grows back quickly and they aren't show dogs. Yes, the noose looks scary, but doesn't bother the furbabies at all. One side of the table is against a wall so they can't slip off and I'm always on the other side. The cord for the dryer is plugged in at the far end from the pup. So far, it works great for me. If I try to groom them any other way, they just plop down and it's much more work. |
Well, it sounds like you have things under control. I hate to cut their nails, too. I usually bring her in once a month or so and have Petco or another pet store cut her nails while I hold her. I do know how to cut them but it is too scary and I don't want to make a mistake. Good luck to you! |
