Well when I was talking to Lilys doc today about her recovery and I asked what kind of pain meds she will be on she said she was not sure yet, then she said she would send home a few days worth. That a small amount of pain was good for Lily, that it would keep her quiet. I am not sure about this answer, I have head on here about how bad the pain is for the lp surgery and the fact that the Doc only wants to give me a few days worth makes me really nervous. Any thoughts please.

at first i thought you were talking about a Spay.. and Layla didn't come home with meds for her spay and was fine.. but for LP!!! HELL YES you need meds... you might want to see another vet... i would be changing for sure...

Don't get mad at me but I have another angle regarding the vets response... I think he meant that he doesn't want her to feel 100% so she risks damaging the results of the surgery, does that make sense? A little bit of pain will keep her quiet meaning she won't want to go tearing around and hurt herself even more. Does that make sense? But if your not comfortable with it, don't do it. I hope she does well, poor little baby!!! Good luck and keep us posted.

When my shih had the surgery he had a pain patch attached to his tummy. After a week and a half I had to remove it and return it to the hospital. The Dr did this so he could get a contuous set of pain relief because he said it was going to be very painful the first few days of recovery especially because he was an active pup.

Didn't think of this angle and it does make sense.

your dog should be on pain meds for at least a week. Some are sent home with Fentanyl patches as well which last for 5 days. After a week the pain should be minimal. Sometimes a little bit of pain is good. Your vet is right, it will slow them down. They would only hurt if they do too much so they quickly learn not to. Its not that they would be in constant pain.

a little bit of pain is a good thing (although you don't want her to be in a lot of pain). You can't tell a dog that they just had surgery and need to be still...if they feel great, they are going to be their normal, active selfs. Pain is a signal that something isn't right and will keep the dog from injuring itself. I'm pretty sure that is what your vet meant

Just like with people, the pain meds don't take away ALL of the pain. In addition, the pain meds can make them sleepy. Between the two, Gracie was quiet for about 10 days. My vet gave me about two weeks worth of Rimadyl and 10 days worth of Tramadol. I would question anything less than a week's supply. There is no reason for your baby to suffer. This is a painful surgery. I wish your little one the best.

:yeahthat:Our vet did the same. If anyone has ever been on pain meds, then you know you don't want to do much of anything while on them.

These little guys can't tell us how much discomfort they're in!

Can you imagine having your leg sliced open and your doc giving you the equivalent of some Tylenol????

Our vet did the same with Katie two weeks worth....This is a very painful surgery.Gracie2006-Is right, there is no reason for your baby to suffer. I wish your baby the best. I will keep your baby in my prayers.

My surgeon doesn't believe in letting them be in pain. Lucy was prescribed 2 different pain meds one was for the first week and the other was for the first 2 weeks. And when I needed more they called my local vet and I picked it up there.

I know my experiences don't carry a lot of weight, because I don't post much. I'm more of a lurker, but I do follow a lot of the threads. I just think that I don't often have anything worth posting.


Good luck with the surgery. I'll be praying for you both.

Here's a picture of Lucy after her LP surgery. She was only four months old. You can see her poor little bare butt from where she was shaved LOL She looked pretty funny until it grew back in. As it grew out I had the groomer taper the rest of her coat so it would blend in more with what was just coming in.

are you kidding??? anyone who has been through it is DEFINITLY worth hearing from!!!! and in think your opinion is dead on... they can't tell us how much they are hurting....
Lucy is stunning.. i think you need to be less of a lurker and more of a poster of her pretty face :) Where did you get the surgery done?? i see you are in Michigan.. i'm in London Ontario.. not too far...

I had it done at Michigan Veterinary Specialists. It's near Detroit. I'd have to look it up again to remember esactly where, but they were the greatest people. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. They were so good to us and explained everything very well.

so you have a regular vet and they recommended you go there??? Layla will probably have to have this done sooner than later.. her one knee pops quite easily.. and i just want her to go to the best place... Detriot is 2 hours away from us... and while not ideal (esp with the stupid boarder) i just want to go to the best place when the time comes.

Lucy was born with grade 4 in both knees. Yes my vet has an orthopedist, but he said this was beyond him. He said I could take her Michigan Vetrinary Specialist or MSU, but he preferred Michigan Vetrinary Specialist and the cost several hundred dollars less of both knees were done at the same time.

I knew there was something wrong with Lucy when I got her, but I got her anyway, because she was supposed to be about the same size as my Caesar. I just didn't know how much it was going to cost. Oh well! She's beautiful and funny and I love her to death. I I hadn't gotten her I would have really missed out.

I wouldn't be too happy with them. Not giving pain meds (or limiting them) is old fashioned for the most part. The two reasons you shouldn't give it are if your dog had a c-section and has to nurse or if they have a health issue and the meds would hurt them. There are studies showing that dogs heal faster with less pain. Any pain is too much. Yes, I understand that dogs don't know that they are supposed to relax but that is no reason to force them to be in pain. Pain meds can make them sleepy which is a good thing. I know some vets don't give them after spays. Any vet who cuts a dog's abdomen open and then says they don't need pain meds should have to get their abdomen cut open and see how it feels.

If your baby needs those meds, demand them.

My regular vet is great, she gave lily a weeks worth of pain meds after her spay. This doc at MSU is world renowned and wrote most of the text books on the issue or so I am told. So when she said she would only give Lily a few days of pain meds I was not sure what to think. She is an older doc. so mabe she just has some old fashioned thoughts. We will see, if I have a problem I will call my local vet, I do not want lily is to much pain.

Ellie's vet went to school at MSU and she does NOT like to see animals in pain.:) I'm sure your regular vet will give you something if you need it.
