Doggie Blues (Petsitter or Kennel)? We are going on a weeks trip, and cannot take the dogs. I just viewed the Kennel at my vets today. Basically a doggie prison, and they only take them out to potty 2 times a day! I have a friend who's willing to come to my house on her lunchhour. But I need someone over the weekend too. There are a few petsitters around town, but I'm also apprehensive letting a stranger in my house. Almost as much apprehensive about that as I am leaving them in a kennel surrounded by barking dogs 24/7 for 9 days. PLUS whats super sad is I'd have to bring them the night before we leave to the vets kennel because we leave early the next morning! I am absoloutely heartbroken and really don't want to go on this trip. I think I'll just have a nervous breakdown and plead insanity! What would you guys do? Petsitter come by a few times a day or kennel ? I have a yorkie mix and a shih tzu, both little girls who'd share the same run at the kennel if I do that. |
I would have someone come to my house. That way they will still be in their own environment. I know how you feel. I don't trust anyone with my boys. I haven't left them in 2 years. I always keep my eyes open for someone that I trust that would come and stay at my house. Good Luck, I hope you're able to enjoy your vacation. |
There is no way two times a day being let out is enough for a Yorkie. I would insist at least four or five. I wouldn't let someone come let them out that I don't know either, especially for such a long vacation. Friends and family only or a GOOD kennel.:) |
i wouldnt do the kennel at all...do u have a family member that can stay there or something...i dont trust strangers in my house if i need to get away i take martini or she stays with my sister in law |
I had to go away over night for my sons graduation. I hired my friends daughter who was 20. She came to the house, slept with Chewy in my bed, and he was fine. Do you know some one with a young adult you can trust? It's just a thought. |

aw, I would say go with a pet sitter. I know it's probably gonna be hard to find someone you'll trust at your house, but your babies would probably be a lot happier at home!! I wish I was in texas, so I could sit for you! I am trying to actually start a little pet sitting business! :) Good Luck with whatever you decide to do! I know it is tough leaving your babies! |
We are going out of the country for two weeks this summer and Tucker will be staying with his breeder. Would there be anyone willing to keep your dogs at their house? That way they wouldn't be alone or kenneled and you wouldn't have to worry about someone coming into your house. |
100% petsitter if you know them or can verify their credentials. Ideally someone who can stay with your babes. They would be much more comfortable at home. Try posting notices at your church or at a Senior Citizen's center. |
Do you have one of the Petsmart Hotels near you? We went and dropped in on a Saturday - no appointment or anything - and asked for a tour and they gladly showed us their entire facility and we were very pleased. It is a little expensive - but someone is there 24 hours and they have a vet on call. Do you use a groomer? If so, have you checked with them.....they might be willing to help you out. Someone else mentioned breeder.....do you stay in tough with yours? I know my silky breeder allows their pups to come stay with them while their owners go on vacations/trips. |
All the other YTers gave you good advice but I totally understand about how you feel about leaving your baby this is how I get around the holidays with my husband's family.....but try Petsmart's Hotel or a Groomer! |
Ummm, try and find a pet hotel, doggie daycamp. I visited a doggie daycamp and what they do is put the pups in their crates or beds at night and during the day they are allowed to run and play with other dogs or just lounge in shades, some even have pools for hot months. A pet hotel has the option of putting them in a cage with other dogs side by side and they also have more private quiet rooms, with radio on and animal planet. If you have a petsmart near you, they have some private quiet rooms, plus during the day they can play with other dogs. When I went on vacation is 2006, I left my kitties at home and boarded Zander. My mother in law was to come over, play with the kitties, feed them, etc. The evening of the day we were gone, we had a housefire. The fire burned for hours, soot all over. One kitty died, the other miraculously survived. Since then I won't ever leave pets in the home while on vacations. Can you have a relative house sit? I wish you much luck. |
Hopefully you can find a better kennel in your area.Letting a dog out twice a day is totally unacceptable.I am amazed they are even licensed. The kennel Bunny goes to when I am away is like a luxury hotel. They have structured playtimes etc.Best of luck in finding a more appropriate solution.:) |
Do you know any college/older high school students that could sit for you? I know around here there are a lot of students that babysit or petsit because they need extra cash. Other than that I would probably use a pet sitter if I met them first and asked for references. |
our family has always done the petsitter ... they are normally bonded. Is there a neighborhood kid that can do it ? |
