Question for parents that refuse to Microchip your babies...
 
Ok I am contemplating it. I know that there are some folks on here that refuse to Micro their babies...would you mind sharing why? I want to weigh all the pros and cons and see if it's just about:

1) a sense of paranoia (no offense)
2) financial reason
3) just never really thought about it and it's benefits
4) or if you are just of the old fashioned mind set (no offense) like my dad and think such things are silly.

I more than likely won't. I do not take Gypsy many places that she is not in my or Jim's arms. The only thing I worry about it someone taking her from my arms. She does not go outside at all at home (pee pads). It's a joke around here that she doesn't do dirt.
I feel that the actual chance of getting lost is so minimum and if she was not many people around here would take a dog to be checked. This is the country and people would take in a dog or look for flyers. This may sound silly but it is the way I feel .

The thing is...no one PLANS on losing their dog (or at least I hope not)...but there is always the risk of that happening... I will always microchip my pets..the more ID the better. Doesn't guarantee they'll be returned but it sure does increase my chances...I would much rather be safe than sorry

I started thinking about it more due to the rush of stolen yorkies and plus the way I lost Lulu. If she hadn't been hit by that car the heffa would have been gone like the little wind sprinter she proved herself to be. Then what if I wouldn't have caught her how on earth would she have been identified.

Lulu was such a small cute girl I doubt that anyone would have been volunteering to return her to me.

My vet told me that micro chipping hurts...(he said it can be pretty bad) He suggested that they get chipped when they are under for spayed or teeth cleaning. That's what we did with Chewy and will also with SAdie.

None of those reasons apply for Ellie.:)

I have chosen not to because, while it isn't silly, it is putting something "readable" into your dog. I consider it a mini computer and Ellie is not a robot.;)

So it is more of an ethical reason for me. I see it coming to humans and do not support it at all. I am a person a prefer not to be identified by a chip.

That's all.

I certainly understand why people would want to do it though. It is a personal preference.

Yeah the company says that it's a bit hurtful...that is why I am trying to decide for sure and have them implant it while she is under for her spay.

I don't think that I would microchip and guess it's because of fear. I know there are studies out there on both sides of the cancer issue, but as of now would wait until there is more definitive proof that they won't cause a cancer. I mean sometimes it can take years (decades even) for research to be conclusive. And, after knowing nutrition science with regard to dogs hasn't been that great, I just don't trust whats known right now.

I would tend to have a tattoo done before microchipping.

Btw, I did watch a dog on an Animal Planet show just last night get a microchip and it did seem painless actually. The dog never even whimpered or flinched.

I just wonder if the chip can migrate to other areas. It's not imbedded the muscle (thank god because I am sure that would hurt) and just kind of free floating under the skin.

I am a little fearful about the cancer possiblities or other health possibilities..just not sure since the fear of her getting stolen or lost is a just as strong....

Neither Angel nor Sissy yelped when they got chipped. It was much more painful for them to have blood drawn and we do that regularly for their health checks. But, if you are spaying or having teeth cleaning done and are considering chipping, it is a good time to do that and tatooing (if you choose to go this route).

How many microchipped dogs do you? How many of those that are microchipped have cancer?

I'm not against it, just more on the fence than anything. Why haven't I had Gizmo chipped then?

-my vet doesn't do it, and I just don't like the idea of taking him to a new vet or a local shelter to have it done

-I've heard some scary stories that are probably NOT true, but they scare me. I need to take the time to do the research and just haven't done it yet. (I am not going to share them because I don't want to scare someone else unnecessarily.)

-I don't know how much testing has been done regarding long-term side effects.

Britney's chip migrated a bit to the right (maybe less than an inch) and Brooklyn's chip moved all the way to the side of his neck.

That part freaked me out a little. :p

How many microchipped dogs do you? How many of those that are microchipped have cancer?
There was a study done....only two dogs were found to have a tumor in the site of the microchip...and this is out of thousands and thousands of dogs and cats microchipped over like 15 years. And there wasn't proof that the microchip actually caused the tumor....but 2 dogs out of hundreds of thousands? I don't see it as a risk
