United All Breed Registry |
My puppy's parents are AKC, but he isn't... ? |
That's another one of those 'alternative" registries that sprung up after the AKC got tougher and started requiring DNA testing, etc. The alternative registries are popular with backyard breeders and puppy mills who have either been suspended from the AKC or don't qualify. If you notice in their FAQS section, they say they are endorsed by the USDA. That is not a good sign. Large commercial breeders are required to be licensed by the USDA. Those are the breeders we refer to as "puppy mills". I notice you live in Missouri. That is considered to be the puppy mill capital of the US. Have you checked the list to see if your breeder's name is on it? http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/ListA2006.pdf So your puppies parents are AKC, but has to be registered with this registry? There must have been some problem with the AKC. The DNA testing could have shown the sire wasn't correct, perhaps the breeder got suspended for some reason, there could be a number of reasons why he can't be AKC registered. Have you asked your breeder about it? |
My breeder was not on the list attached above... I emailed to ask her about it, hopefully she'll get back to me soon. Diana |

if parents are akc pups are akc seems fishy |
My friend has a puppy registered with UABR and AKC... She told me that UBAR gives you a free pedigree with their registration. She said that had she been just UABR, she wouldn't have purchased her.. |
My breeder said that AKC was available, but most people don't bother when their puppy is just a pet. The UAB gives the list of puppy's family history. She also said the AKC asks for DNA testing at the breeder's expense - and that the tests were expensive ... and unnecessary. |
AKC only asks for DNA tests on frequently used sires or if there is a question on the parentage of the puppies. This is a great tool and is not expensive, about $40.00. So it is not necessary to have this done on your pet puppy. I believe this is one of the reasons there are soooooo many "breeders" that have gone to the "alternative" registries as these "breeders" dont want or wont keep good breeding records that AKC requires.JMO |

I would be suspicious of any breeder who tells you they don't register their puppies with the AKC because it's too expensive or that DNA testing is not necessary. The main reason breeders register their dogs with the "don't ask/don't tell" alternative registries is because they have been suspended from the AKC or don't qualify. Here's a link to information about the AKC and DNA: http://www.akc.org/dna/ |
