Sad Trucker Story Some of you know hubby and I drive a semi (well until I got hurt) so have a lot of truckin friends. Well last week we had some friends that were in a wreck. Both taken to the hospital but their little dog was taken to some shelter. They were released from the hospital about 10 days later well it was yesterday and tried to find their baby only to learn that she had been euthanized because no one claimed her !!!!! Before you ask the family just didn't think about the the baby and assumed she was being cared for. I just wonder if there is any way to set up some kind of system to help the truckers out there as I am guessing here but I figure 80% of them have a pet on that truck. It never dawned on me what happens to the babies in an event like this but give me a break here these people are really our lifelines if not for them we would not get our food, doggie stuff, clothes even our homes. So there has to be a way to set up a rescue ring to take a drivers pets in the event they have a wreck or get sick on the truck and end up hospitalized so they can be reunited with their beloved pet or the family can get that baby home. Some of these men and women their fur baby is all they have and they do dote on them like you would not believe. It frightens me as when I am driving all our fur babies take turns in the truck and right now Sebastian is on the truck with his daddy they are team a sick team but a team. You can not imagine the bond these drivers and their babies have after all they are together literaly 24/7 Any ideas on how we might can help these knights of the road ? Also I will add this ... I know what the general thought of a trucker is and I used to think they were trashy until I started driving in my Ralphie baby jeans and sweater and it did not take me long to go buy those 4 dollar shorts at a walmart sale...makes you sick when you ruin that $100 jeans or that $125 sweater and forget what happened to my cute little prada shoes that my mom gave me :( lol I learned real quick why we dress like we do out there...even my cute Jammies got nailed :( |

Ya know, I have always wondered when some one gets in an accident where do they take the dogs in the car? I swear this has always crossed my mind when I go anywhere with my dogs. I CAN NOT believe they killed this poor guys dog! How horrible. WHo the heck is in charge? Gosh you would think that they would be told, the owner was in a bad wreak and he will get his dog when he is out of the hospital!!! This makes me soooo mad. |
|
That is very sad:( It seems like under the circumstances they would have put the dog on a hold and it wouldnt have been euthanized How awful for that dog owner. |
|
we all have been asking that question why did they not put the dog in a special enviroment. The wife was driving and her hubby was asleep in the bunk when the wreck happened neither was able to talk so have no clue why the cops or someone on the scene did not try to take the dog until they could get to her. She was Cavalier Charles Spaniel ... I am fuming as this baby was their child since they could never have a kid. She was 7/8 yrs old...just makes me sick ! Her mommy is just torn up and I mean bad .... they got an apology and like they said big deal doesn't make it right |

That is so sad may that lil baby RIP! Gosh, the only thing I could think of doing is some sort of routine that Police and EMT's do in that sort of situation. Like bring that pup to a shelter and that dog is in no way shape or form allowed to leave or be touched (well other then to be taken care of) until things are resolved. It could be some law passed. Or I know others would find this silly but I know I don't, you know when you have the in case of an emergency card this is who you call to take care of the dog...or even better a card you keep in your wallet or purse! Because I know Parker is my SON, fur and all, and I would be so worried about him. |
|
That is beyond sad i am on fire right now even thinking about it  I cannot believe that they would do that:mad: Did no one tell them that the that the dog belonged to someone when they took it in? That is just crazy oh i am so angry i cannot even type right now:mad:    |

Wow! That is so sad. I can hardly believe that this poor baby couldn't be held for at least 10 days! I am sure your friends are heartbroken and I feel for them. I hope your friends find peace. Have a great day! |
|
That is so sad i dont see why the police officer didnt tell the shelter that the owners was in a accident so they can hold the dog until they were released. the poor couple having been in a accident then being released to only find out that your pet was put down .just because no one claimed it. |
|
 That's heartbreaking!! Please know that everybody doesn't look down on truck drivers. Some of the most wonderful people I know are in that profession.  My friend & her hubby were going to Denver one day when they saw a wreck up ahead. A pickup pulling a camping trailer had overturned and rolled down an embankment. They inched on past in traffic and realized there was something up ahead causing traffic to swerve around it. When they got up closer and saw what it was, it was a little bitty Pug in the highway and it was terrified. She screamed for her husband to stop the car, jumped out, ran right into the traffic trying to catch that poor frightened pup. She sat right down in the road, calling the scared pup and he ran right to her and jumped in her lap. She held him close and ran back out of the highway and by then there were people frantically searching for him ... he had been in the truck that turned over!! I so wish your friends could have had an angel like her to rescue their baby! I can only imagine their grief and will be praying that they will heal. |

what ticks me off even worse is we drive for the same company and that company KNOWS who has a pet on that truck ! The police should have made a point to tell the shelter the owners were in a wreck that she was not a stray but guess they didn't but they &#$ knew where the baby was taken when Paul called looking for her ! I am going to write to OOIDA it is a trucker thing will find the link maybe if we all can write to them they can lobby for some action if I can find that link ...heck it can happen to those in motor homes or any one on a car trip... like this case the family was not even thinking of the dog only of Patti and Paul... I forgot to ask where they were .. I know it was in one of these winter storms |

I know exactly what you mean the time we went to California i took a shower before i left and i didn't get another one until i got home  Mom always brought a few milk jugs of water and some wash clothes and yep baby wipes to just so we wouldn't feel so nasty and word of advice don't get a perm right before you take off on a trip lol you can just imagine how i looked my the time we got back home it was a scary site:eek: And no it isn't crazy at all to me it is totally the norm i know how lonely it gets on the road and heck i even had my parents with me. But i have met many truckers who have babies with them and as soon as you meet them you just know how it is they are their babies their kids and without them i don't think they could go on. It is unreasonable to think that you can take your new born baby or your kid with you on the road like that believe me my dad tried and it didn't work so that is what these furbabies are for them their childeren and i for one totally understand and for all the truckers still going at it they all get a big     from me :D |
|
Oh, that's so sad:cry: I'm so sorry for him:( You'd think that whoever transported the dog to the shelter would have made it clear that the owner was hospitalized:confused: I think truckers are awesome, it's a hard job and they tend to get stereotyped as dumb hillbillies and such:rolleyes: If it weren't for them, we'd all starve to death and the economy would grind to a halt. So bless your husband for providing a very valuable service to all of us:thumbup:  So y'all dress however you like, being comfortable is a top priority for me, so I can't imagine driving a big rig all day long dressed to the nine's:laugh: |

I got the email address for OOIDA it is ooida@ooida.com Now I do not know much of the details on where they were or anything .. I am not even sure I asked. Nor am I sure writing to them is the right place to start but it is a place What I am saying in my letter is basically that it has come to my attention of a wreck and how the drivers baby was lost due to ingnorance and please lets help correct this. Thinking about writing to this other group not sure what they were called but they were fighting against tired drivers... maybe your dad would know ? |

I can ask him but i doubt he would he has been off the road for about 20 years now and on top of that he had a major stroke over 13 years ago that left him with not such a good memory :( I am going to ask the truckers i know though and see what i can find out there has to be a way we can do something so that this never happens again. |

he probably would not remember. I have to take morphine for my pain and I get really foggy and forgetful or else I could think of more places to hit. You know I am not to sure they were not near Indy .... |

I am going to search my butt off online and with talking to truckers and hopefully i will have some info to post here today :) I am sorry to hear you are in that much pain :( Near Indy? Hmmmmmm i haven't heard of anything but then again we don't get all the news in this little hick town |

I still have a little scar from it lmao... I do appreciate you searching. I have to go to PT now and will not be back until later. If they would just fix my neck it would be over... For some reason Indy is in my mind but could be wrong. I know it was at night and she lost control of the truck on ice and it flipped. |

I am so very sorry for so many things here..... for your accident that has prevented you from truckin', for the accident that insured your friends, and my heart is just breaking for their little friend who was lost. I sincerely hope that someone comes up with an idea to help. Maybe even a simple window sticker that says "Please Save My Dog" with a name and description of the dog and a phone number to call. At least that way someone could coordinate a rescue effort. |

I'm so sorry about your friends. That never should have happened. My heart goes out to them. |

I am heartbroken to hear about your friends. I can't imagine their pain. It sounds like several balls were dropped here. I would find out where the accident occurred and contact the media in that area -- because their story needs to be told, to draw attn to this problem. The police messed up, the trucking company and the shelter. Perhaps if the story is told, this will help with making some changes in the industry. |
|
That ticks me off. I'm with another poster who said that whoever transported the pet to the shelter should have advised them that there WAS an owner who was hospitalized. I'd be all over that shelter. And for that matter why didn't one of their family member go pick up the dog? |
|
OMG this just tears my heart! :( How horrible, someone should be accountable! |
|
I feel so bad for the dog and your friends:( I used to have a Cavalier also..i hope something is done about it. That's not right that they put her to sleep! btw i never have looked down on truckers. |

Well I am not a good friend as I have yet to call them ! I really do not know what to say to them. I did get some info on it. The wreck was week ago Wed and was on I80 in NE. Lacy was gone by friday. The family was in OK and was not EVEN notified of the wreck for 3 days... now remember I am getting this info 3rd hand and from a trucker ... even though that is my trade Max's Mom can tell you a trucker can get a story bigger than it was even though we are all dear friends. Ok the family did not think about Lacy until last Sunday and could not get any info on her until Mon. If I know Paul the issue will not drop and after the shock wears off I can imagine all you know what is going to break lose. I read some of the suggestions here and they are all great. As for the stickers on our trucks we have them but the stickers did not save Lacy as some idiot just did not care. I like the getting the story to the news and did pass this on to my trucking friends. So come Monday Morning there will be calls made. You know the Hunt Corp transports all those poor babies in Semis I wonder what happens to those babies when something goes wrong ? Lacy was not microchiped so mommies and daddies MICROCHIP that baby.. I am wondering if that would have saved Lacy |
