AKC new legislation/Puppymills Well I just got this in a email, the AKC has signed up on a piece of legislation that places regulations and inspections for people who breed more then 7 litters a year. Hmmmm...THANK YOU for posting that - It was interesting... I'm always happy to hear any new Bills regarding the welfare of animals - I'd LOVE to see the Animal Welfare Act get REALLY tough on all the many breeders popping up - The internet is so full of people selling dogs like merchandise it's getting scary. One of the problems is the AKC Makes $$$ off the breeders that DO register their litters... and this part bothers me - FOUR % will be affected ? Am I reading that right ? Specifically the bill would require those breeding seven or more litters AND selling 25 dogs each year to be licensed and inspected by the USDA. We estimate that less than 4 percent of AKC’s existing customers who register litters would be subject to inspections under this new bill. Those same 4 percent have also been subject to AKC inspections and we believe they are already maintaining standards above and beyond what is proposed under the new bill. |
Akc AKC is trying..unfortunately, many millers no longer go the AKC route. Most high volume breeders are CKC and ACA..or like the puppy miller Kelly recently visited...no papers at all. More and more pet owners tell me pet shop pups are not AKC, plus any breeder who wants to avoid an inspection/DNA/record keeping goes to an alternative registry. No easy solution is there...? |
I am glad to see more effort put into stopping puppy mills. It may only effect a small number of breeders but that small number is better than none I guess. I have noticed that many breeders go with CKC or ACA. What is ACA? Are they only going with these registries because they are not as strict as AKC? OR are they better than AKC? I am not to informed on either of those except from what I have been told. |
That is right, Pat! Take a look at the Bill closely. I have some comments on a new post - Senate Bill 1139 Good/Bad. Sorry - didn't see this one, too early yet and needed one more cup of coffee I guess. My all breed dog club members are against this Bill. And they are not puppymill owners. We do need to check into it more and see who it would affect. From the meeting last night it even would affect regular pet owners. Yes, I agree puppymills are really bad - but they will find a way around it. But good caring pet owners which would follow the law - what does it mean to us? T. |
AKC is supporting this Bill 1139 in Senate, but would affect all US not just through AKC. T. |
From what I have read on it it effects only those that have more then 7 litters a year and something like 25 animals sold a year!! Am I reading wrong?? |
From what I read it only effects larger breeders. Those that have a few females will not be effected. THe rescue shelters will be effected though. I have in the past rescued animals and then readopted them out. I didn't charge fees, but I know alot of places do. This bill is a tough call on whether it is good or bad there are pros and cons to it. |
The way the Bill is now - it is open to a lot of interpetations. For example if you profit more than 500. a year by selling your pups - you will need a USDA license and you also have to count the dogs and litters co-own and if you sell a dog that later becomes a stud dog - yep! you too. Or what is you find a nice puppy and buy it but your frind is going by that town and can pick up that puppy you just bought - saving you a trip - yes, you both will need a license. Or what if you rescue animals and are transporting them - yes, you too will need a license. We figured it out last night that anyone with a USDA license will need to own 20 acres of land. Also if you sell a dog and that new owner later takes the dog hunting with him -- you will need a USDA license. Or if you raise two or more kinds of animals - you too will need a USDA license. See there is more too this one. We need a law to stop puppymills - but this sounds like it will affect all of us that love our dogs or are trying to help other dogs. Please read up on it! I just read the information on the AKC site. There is alot to this bill, but most of it looks good IMO. I know there are many out there who would disagree. True rescue programs that are not doing it for proffitt will not be effected. Hobby breeders who produce fewer than 25 pups or 7 litters a year will not be effected which ever comes first. There may be more released on this bill that could change my view, but so far it looks like the bill may help alot. |
