Chubba Chunk?? I had Piper at the vet Tuesday of last week and he weighed 3.1 lbs. He had a terrible cold so he was put on meds and was unable to get his 16 week shots, so I took him back this past Tuesday, all healthy and ready to go, and when they weighed him he was a whooping 3.6 lbs. He gained a whole 1/2 lb in a week!! Is this a normal growth spurt or am I looking at a future chubba chunk? He did have a horrible cold for almost 2 weeks and was looking thin for awhile and now he looks so healthy (Thank God :D ) but I am wondering if it's too much weight too soon or is it just a growth spurt and he'll slow back down in weight gain? |
I think they do have growth spur and around 6 - 7 months it will be slower. I wouldnt worry about him being chunky. If Im wrong, im sure someone more knowladgeble will correct me. ;) |
Chunk You mention meds- was he placed on any type of steroids? A side effect of steroids is fluid retention and weight gain ( both temporary). One may be gave them to help with allergies and different types of inflamations that could occur in the lungs/bronchial tubes with respiratory infections. Was he weighed on a differnt scale at the vet's office or could the scale not have been set back to zero before he waas weighed. He just may be going through is teen age growing spurt. Did you feed him a lot of goodies since he was ill- that you might not have fed him during a normal week? Well that is my four options. Wnalegria |
Growth Spurts I know when I brought Sophie Home almost a month ago...I took her immediately to the vets for a check over. :) We went back in two weeks for her 12 wk shots and she gained 1 pound exactly in that two week period~ :p So thats 1/2 pound a week! LOL She is doing well...it will be interesting when I take her back for her Rabies and get her weighed. We can tell she has been growing or going through a Growth spurt of some kind. |
Maximus went from being under 3lbs until he was almost 4 moths and then all of a sudden in a month he shot up to 4.5 lbs..lol..growth sprut..I hope so..lol |

I agree with everyone above. Dogs will eat almost nothing when they're sick (unlike me...my motto is feed a cold, stuff a fever, lol!). I'd say the weight gain is good and he should be back to regular eating habits now that he's well. BTW, I love the name Piper! Very original. |
The same thing happened to Gracie and Sampson. Gracie stopped growing at 7 months but Sampson is still growing as he is just 6 months, but he has slowed down. Don't worry. |
I think everything is normal sometimes. I wouldn't worry about weight gain yet, piper is still a baby. Once a little older, you want to make sure they maintain a good weight - not too fat or thin. The hair can also be deceiving. Bronx has curly, fluffy hair and it makes him look so much bigger when it grows out a little. |
