You even try to discipline him and he starts barking at you and comes at you. Poor thing spends so much time in his playpen. Besides that he still eats his poop, whines, whines, whines, and whines some more.God forbid you should try to eat something, he thinks you are suppose to share it. More whining. I am home all day and all we do is work on his behavior. I really do love him to death and he has his moments. But it is my husband who gets really upset at him. We looked a long time for him, we researched, but I think they left out the parts where they do all these things. LOL. I just want him to be a good boy and love me as much as I love him.

Awe, I sure feel for ya, believe me, I know what you mean. My hubby got frustrated earlier this evening with Maggy May when he was trying to play with her and all she kept doing is biting him, finally he got up and put her in her kennel. I told him he can't use her kennel as a form of punishment though, that's not a good thing to associate the kennel with. She doesn't whine when she's in her kennel, she just goes in, climbs in her bed and goes to sleep, thank God, lol. I got her back out and put her down on the floor and when she went to bite him (his feet) I went over and got her and gave her a toy. She tried biting me so I tossed the toy and she ran after it. We did this for about 10 minutes and I had to keep throwing her toy, God forbid I held it for a second to long, she'd start biting again if I did that, lol. Have you tried the whistle yet? I was gonna get the bitter apple tonight to but walmart was out of it, I'm glad they were cause so far this evening, the whislte is working wonders!:D Does it just make ya wanna rip your hair out though when all you wanna do is pet them and they try to have your whole hand for a snack? Lol!

I went through this with Piper and I used a technique my animal behaviorist told me...basically you clean out a closet or use a dark room and when the puppy puts teeth on anyone for any reason you say sharply "no teeth"..or whatever you want to use. But you have to always use the same phrase. Then you pick up the puppy and put them in the darkened (but safe) place away. You apparently start out with 7 minutes or so (I have heard different timings...but they have always been over 5 minutes). I set the timer...it's the longest time EVER!. Then you go and open the door and let your puppy out and resume normal play..just as if nothing happened. When they do it again, you do EXACTLY the same thing again. Say the same phrase and remove them from the fun (like a kid timeout) for the 7 minutes or whatever. Yorkies are really smart and mine picked up on the idea that putting teeth on people isn't such a grand and fun idea. The key to it was to to be totally consistant. No "you can put teeth on this person, but not on that person". It has to be the same rules for all humans. Anyway..hope this helps. It helped tons for us. Oh..and additionally, make sure you have all sorts of different toys for him to chew on..different textures. Like those kong baby puppy bones (really soft plastic), as well as maybe a stuffed toy and a chew stick (the kind made from beef tendon or something). They do like to chew at that age..teething.

I'm going through this with my puppy, I'll try this, thanks!

I'm sorry to hear these methods aren't working for you.. have you tried the sour apple yet?

I like the method PipperPuppy's talking about! I'd try that first (if it were me)

Nope, I haven't tried the sour apple apple/bitter apple yet, I was gonna but I went out tonight ad bough a whistle and it seems to be doing the trick WONDERFULLY! I guess it's different with a shaker can cause she seen me shaking it and I'm sure she thought it was a toy. With the whislte, when I blow it, I do it load and fast, just real quick and then I let it drop down, it's on a string around my neck, and then I very sternly say "No Bite!" Or if she's trying to get under the desk back to the wires, I say, "No, Out!" I'm gonna stick to this method cause it really seems to be working. I'm not trying to be mean or anything here, but I really don't like the method PipperPuppy's suggested. It just seems so mean to me. I mean, when I say I love my furkids like my skin kids, I really mean it. When our kids were little and they needed a time out, that was fine, I could put them in a chair with no problem and give them a time out, but I could no way ever put them in a dark closet for a time out (and I know she wasn't suggesting I do that to a skin kid) I'm just saying, I love our furkids like our skin kids and I just couldn't do that to her or any of our furkids for that matter. I don't mean to sound ungreatful for any of the suggestions, I appreciate them all, there's just certain ways I treat our furkids and I do what I'm comfortable with. Thank you all, I appreciate all your replies.

She should learn that biting makes playtime stop and gets ignored.

 Yes that technique worked like a magic with Maxi. Once he was biting playfuly I made a crying sound and made my hand limb like its dead. That cought his attention he stoped and I ignored him for a little while. Couple of times I did that and it worked he doesnt do that anymore. Dogs think nothing of it until you correct them and let them know that it hurts. They dont want to hurt us:)

Funny how a 2 pound 6 ounce furbutt can bring you to your knees, lol. So I started being very stern about it and telling her no bite and wasn't squeeling or laughing, the darn lil stinker STILL wouldn't let lose of me. My youngest son started to blow in her face and I told him don't do that, she'll start biting your face next. I've used the wistle three times now tonight and boy let me tell ya, she just doesn't know WHAT the heck is going on! I used it twice, once when she got my feet and once when she got our sons feet and she IMMEDIATELY let go and looked at me like:eek: Then she went to go under my desk where all the wires are and I have been tryin like crazy to keep her out of there. Soon as I blew it, she took off in the other direction, lol. Hu, imagine this, who'd have thought this lil wistle would work? So far so good, but I'll be sure and keep ya updated on how it's going.

I am going to get her a whistle today. I do have to laugh though as it is funny to watch these babies that could fit in a hamster cage act like a vicious 150lb guard dog

Off topic a sec I did tell Gilly to go get Lexi a habitrail with an exercise wheel when she asked me what kennel to use when at work ..she actually believed me and was at petsmart calling me to what kind one with tunnels .. "sigh" I thought I had raised one smart kid needless to say grandma went and got her a little Lexi house

I wonder just hour bitter that bitter apple spray is, has anyone here ever tasted it before? Lol. I'm a weird one, I taste a lot of things I give to my furbabies before I give it to them. Just the other night I went to give Elijah an Old Mother Hubbard peanut butter bone treat and I took a bite before I gave it to him. I could only taste a hint of peanut butter but hey, it was better than any other of their treats I've ever tasted, lol.

How funny!! I wish I could but I just couldn't bring myself to taste that stuff, however, I've caught my 4 yr old taking some tastes LOL

LOL, I can't get over how Maggy is, I mean, she's all of 2 pounds 6 ounces and acts like she could take down an elephant, lol! I watch her play with my girl Justice who has ruled this roost since the day she came home with us, and our big dogs are scared of Justice!! I can't believe Maggy just keeps going at her, lol, she's got guts that's for sure. It's paying off though cause now Justice is starting to play back with her and she's NEVER played with any of our other furkids. Oh my word, the story of Gilly just totally cracked me up, LOLOL!!! Now that's something our daughter Jess would do, lolol!! Thanks for the giggle ;-)

It was a little harsh for me, but after struggling with him for weeks I gave up and tried it, he looked at me like I bit him (go figure) and has been perfectly behaved (as far as biting) since. The dog trainer said this replicates what mom would do to him. Good luck!

How exactly do you pinch his upper lip? I tried doing the thing where you hold the mouth closed, I tried holding him belly up, I've tried nose taps... I've tried lots of stuff and he is just not getting it...

Mere_de_Jambo 02-08-2008 12:22 PM

I have tried all the methods as well. It's gotten better but I can tell it is going to take some time. He still tries to bite when he is brushed.

Molly was like that when she was little. I didn't know if I could keep her. But she's three now and would NEVER bite me.

When you say "whistle" do you mean a doggie whistle or just a regular whistle like teachers use on the playground?

I'm using just a regular whistle like a teacher would use on a playground.

4doggiemama 02-08-2008 06:40 PM

KathrynS, you mentioned that your doggie eats poo. I have a puppy mill doggie who has eaten her poo for many years until just lately. I changed from Science Diet (I know--bad, bad,---but I didn't know it until I joined YT.:) ) to a wholistic brand without corn, wheat, or eggs because of my Pommie. Now no more poo eating. I have read here on YT that changing kibble brands helps. Just a thought.
