Compatibility Hi all, I'm new to these forums and I've got a question that hopefully more experienced Yorkie mom/dads will have an answer to. I have a beautiful 8 month old Yorkie (Jasmine, 6 lbs) who I would really like to get a companion for, but I'm not sure what breed would be best, whether to get another Yorkie or another type of small terrier. She's a total go-getter, never still and definately not a lap dog unless I'm trying to get up to go somewhere :). We gave her a 'trial run' with some Maltese pups (6 months old) and she ran all 3 of them into the ground within a short time! Thankfully no one ever told her she's a 'toy' group dog, she's all terrier and I really think she needs a little buddy to keep up with her and help her use up some of that energy! She's very good with sharing toys, food, etc or I wouldn't suggest getting another dog, in fact she loves canine company. We have a large apartment and are soon to move to a bigger house with a fenced yard...so any suggestions? Stick with another Yorkie or try a new breed? |
:wavey: Welcome to YT!! Glad to have you here. Well, another yorkie may be best with your girl. But it is also important to teach her that you are alpha dog & not let her run everybody off. I used to have Bichons and they were fabulous dogs. A bit bigger than your average yorkie, but if I were you I would stick with a smaller breed. I know lots of folks on YT have big dogs - but then you have so many other concerns with different sizes |
Welcome to YT! |
That's easy....another Yorkie of course! They are PERFECT! ;) |
"it is also important to teach her that you are alpha dog & not let her run everybody off" Well, I think I'm as alpha as I can be with a Yorkie, lol, but I just wanted to clear up what I meant with my comment about her and the Maltese pups...she just ran circles around them until they were plumb tired out! She still wanted to play and couldn't understand why they were already tired! I know they were a bit younger, but she was playing with three of them :P. I guess lborman is right, since I do think my Yorkie is perfect! Any recommendations for male versus female and age? I humbly admit...I was a cat person until my Yorkie. Not so sure about doggie dynamics, and while I think most sites say male and younger, they don't say how much younger and I worry she'll hurt a younger yorkie because they are so small until they hit about 6 months, but is 6 months too old and will it cause dominance issues more so than a small new friend she can 'train' to her liking?? |
HELLO and welcome to YT:aimeeyork I WOULD SAY ANOTHER YORKIE AND A GIRL DOMINANCE ISSUES CAN ARISE WITH EITHER SEX BUT MORE COMMON WITH SAME SEX JUST REMEMBER TO NEUTER AND SPAY (I SHOULD KNOW) |
Well, I love having one of each. And every male animal I have ever had have been so easy-going, great lovey-dovey, fun furbabies. Your girl may still want to run the show, but with a male he might not care ;) |
welcometo YT . |
I would get a male yorkie |

Welcome to the forum. Either get another yorkie, or a Pommie, but that is just my prejudices:D . Where abouts in Tulsa are you from:confused: |
I would say get another Yorkie about her size and age with similar energy levels. I think you would have less of a chance of fighting if you got a male. |
hi & welcome to YT |
Thanks so much all for the warm welcomes and advice! I really appreciate it because of course I want to do whatever is possible to make my lil Jasmine happy...these little dogs just blow my mind, although I have decided that mine is definately NOT a dog... I've decided she's at least part deer, part squirrel, part bear, part rabbit and a half a dozen other things! |
Just want to say welcome :) |
