first vet visit Im picking up my 12 old week male puppy this sat.I was wondering if i should make an appt for that sat to go see the vet? The breeder is giving me a health guarantee and i trust her.The puppy is very healthy but i still wonder if i should take him right away or should i wait until his 16th week when he is ready for the rabbies shot. what were some of the things you did when you picked up your pup?:animal36 |
I would take him in for a puppy check . Bring a stool sample for testing . Welcome to Yorkie Talk .:) |
Welcome tp Y.T. and Congratulations on your new addition!....Personally, I waited, I figured why rush it....I never do combo shots and I only do one vaccine per visit with 3-4 weeks in between so as to not stress the immune system....Good luck....as suggested already, a stool sample is a very good idea, sometimes you can't always see if there's a problem with parasites.... |
thank you for the answers.I can just wait then until his 16th week then? Im so happy im getting him this weekend.I just want a healthy puppy. |
take him just to be safe. its always worth it |
ok,i will make an appt for sat then just to be safe. How much is the first visit |
Just to clarify...I meant to take him in for an exam and stool check....but I waited on the rabies shot.....sorry for the mix up....my vet charges $35 for a check up and $12 for a stool check but it can vary greatly ...Good luck..... |

I would take him in right away. Along with a general check up, make sure sure vet checks his knees for luxating patellas and does a bile acids test if you didn't have one done before he left the breeder's house. Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined and Dr. Center recommends that all Yorkie puppies have a BAT before going to their new home. |
it depends on the vet..see if u can get recommended to one by some1 u know..its always better to go to a vet u can trust |

I would say most definitely take him to the vet. Regardless of trusting the breeder, the puppy should be checked for parasites, so bring a fresh stool sample or let the vet take on. Also, I agree that the pup should be bile acid tested. It's a simple, inexpensive blood test that checks liver function... How old is your puppy?? Congrats on your new baby!! |
Some breeders only give you 72 hours to take the puppy to the vet for the first visit |
Yes definitely take him in as soon as possible! Even if he seems healthy, there may be underlying problems that you would never know about unless checked by a vet. If you don't already have a vet or know of any recommendations, I would just call around and see what the prices are like. I know here in OK.. they charge anywhere from 20-60 for a first time visit. My vet is great and only charges me 26. Like the others said, take a stool sample to test for parasites and coccidia. It's always best to catch illnesses early on. |
Definitely take him for a check-up right after you get him |
