Silver Hair Ellie is 7 months old. The top of her hair is all silver. When people see her they think she is really old. I like her coloring alot But she looks greasey about 3 days after her back. I have spent 50 buck at pet smart tring to find the right shampoo for this hair. I am thinking about getting so silver by jermack (human shampoo) to see if this will help. Does any one know of something great?:) |
I've used numerous brands of pet and human shampoos with Ruby. Having silky and fine hair it just needs to be washed every 3-4 days to look it's best. Something that might help is to use a very light conditioner, nothing heavy. |
Mine just turned 6 mos. and she's almost all white on top too, they go through that..Her hair is also very silky and easy to take care of, I take her in about every 3 mos. for her to be cleaned..I have found that when you wash them too often, they do get greasy looking sooner..I used to wash my oldest one(she's 5) too much, and the groomer told me it's bad for them..of course, mine don't go outside, so they don't really get dirty..yours will change color..my oldest one did the same thing when she was this age, now, it's completely that reddish brown color.. |
They go through several color changes before settling on their adult coat. I would post a pic of Abigail at that age; but, lost everything when my pc crashed last month :(. Personally, I wouldn't use human shampoo on dogs, as they have a different ph than we do. One of the show breeders on here recommended (some time back) that silks be washed every 4 days, to keep them looking their best. If your dog's skin is drying out, however, maybe just once a week (my opinion). I use PetSilk on Abigail, and she is a silk coat. btw, her head was white/silver down the middle too, for awhile. Now, it's golden/tan. |
Hannah had the same silvery roots for awhile and now it is blonde. Gracie has the siver roots now and I think it will probably turn too. As far as the oily coat, I bathe mine once a week and sometimes every 4 days. The oiliness doesn't bother me too bad, but I just can not have a stinky dog. I have been using Buddy Wash shampoo and conditoner for awhile now and it is my new favorite. They don't get oily as fast as they did with Pet Silk. John Paul has a waterless shampoo that I heard that is excellent for between baths. |
Chachi and Jewels both have silver hair. I shampoo them with Minksheen. I condition Jewels with Pantene. I condition Chachi with biogroom because the pantene makes him greasy looking |
I have one with a silky coat, she had silver roots that are now turning blonde and she is almost 8months old. I was using an oatmeal shampoo followed by a creme rinse for her but like yours she was getting really oily after just a few days. I stopped using the creme rinse on her and she wasn't getting oily like before. Unfortunately she has broke her leg and I haven't been able to get her in the bath at all so she is indeed looking a bit oily now but not as awful as it could be. The different coat types really do need to be treated differently, my cotton coated girl doesn't get oily at all |
