Sleep apnea or seizures? Im sorry this is a bit long but its VERY important! Do any of your babies suffer from sleep apnea or seizures? Can you tell me what it's like? Prince has had a few episodes (that I know of). This usually happens in the middle of the night and just started a few months ago. So far its only been 3 episodes but he doesnt even seem to know anything happened. He doesnt convulse, but he does stop breathing. no heartbeat, no breathe, no reaction. Last time it happened was right after someone here started a thread on dog CPR. I remembered reading it and when he stopped breathing i blew into his nose. I guess it cause him to gasp, which in turn woke him up and got him breathing again. The vet says to keep a journal of this so we can figure out what it is. She says she's never known a dog to die from seizures, but apnea is a whole nother story. Can those of you who deal with this kinda stuff, please fill me in on what the symptoms are and how your baby handles it? |
Sorry ... I am no help, just wanted to say thoughts and prayers are with Prince!! |

Thank you so much. That means a lot to me. Im so worried that one day he just wont wake up. THANK GOD its not often this happens but its often enough that is scares the s*** out of me. Today he was napping and he suddenly awoke gasping for air. It sounded like he was snorting. It's like he forgets to breath... |
I don't know if these sites will help but they discuss sleep disorders in dogs.. We are thinking about Prince! http://www.dogworksinc.com/main/dogt...0disorders.htm http://sleepdisorders.about.com/cs/s...lkingdom_4.htm |

OH NO! The first link says that if it IS apnea that the ONLY way to possibly fix it is for him to have surgery! OMG! |

YES, YES!!! please give me info. Having a dog can get VERY pricey and I have 4 (had 5 but had to guve up one puppy to my mother in law), and its sooooooooooooooooooooo expenisve. I, ofcourse, want the best for them but I dont know that I can afford to pay for things like this. Please, any info you have id LOVE to read up on. Thank you SOOOO much! |
I had a shepherd/wolfhound mix that had grand mall (sp?) seizures all her life, 8 wks when she started and she died at 15yrs. She was on phenobarbitol which really helped. What your dog has doesn't sound like seizures, probably sleep apnea. I also have a 9yr old Jack Russell that acquired epilepsy about 2 years ago. She is also on phenobarb which helps so much. Hers are different, more just a violent shaking and loss of coordination for a bit, not like Satia who actually contorted and fell over while having a seizure. Your vet can give you more information, just doesn't sound like a seizure to me. |
Sorry I am no help just wanted to say I hope this subsides and he starts doing better. |
My vet just told me that if there is no convulsions , it is apnea . The dog should be check by your vet . |
Megan had apnea when she was born and they had a machine that went off when she stopped breathing. It had a belt that went around her chest. Maybe they make something like that for dogs? It seems like the specialists can do whatever is available for humans on dogs. Try a vet school clinic or a pulminary specialist. (Yes, they really exist for dogs!) But, like previously mentioned I'd look into insurance first! |
Im thinking its apnea too. What else would make him sleep and STOP breathing withOUT any movement? I just called the vet but she was busy, I was told she would call me back soon..I hope co. |
I'm not going to be very helpful either, just wanted to add that I also believe you should get insurance. Also, if it is like human insurance, it will be more expensive if you purchase it AFTER she is diagnosed with something. That must be very terrifying!! I hope you find what it is soon |
