Hi all, What's the recommended age for a Yorkie puppy to go to it's new home? Thanks Jon

no earlier than 12 weeks.

I brought KaCee home when she was 9 weeks old. I know many people feel that is too young, but it was what worked out the best between my breeder and I, due to traveling over the holidays. I did not have any problems with her being so young, but she did gain a lot of size in the weeks following. If your puppy is on the smaller side, the extra time with mom may be a good thing. Also, the additional time with mom will help the puppy learn how to play nice with others.

The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America requires that puppies be at least twelve weeks old before they are sold. If a breeder tries to sell you one any younger, it's a huge red flag that the breeder may be violating other YTCA rules and it's best to move on.


8) All puppies leaving the breeders possession will be a minimum of twelve (12) weeks
of age to facilitate adequate socialization as well as appropriate emotional and

Let me give you a little background on why my question. I'm looking for a nice pup to have as pet. We love Yorkies and decided that's what we want. I found an ad in the local paper for a litter of pups. So we went and looked at them. They were beautiful. The persons house looked well kept and they truely love their dogs. They had 3 adult yorkies and an adult chihuahua. I don't think they are in any clubs and we were told the pregnancy was an accident. The mother is very young and it is her first litter. They were born Dec. 17, 2 males and 1 female. We want the female, she is the largest of the puppies as well. They said they were AKC registered. I think they just don't know much about recommended guidelines for yorkie puppies. The people were very nice and the puppies looked great so I think they are well taken care of. I'm just unsure myself about taking a puppy home at such a young age. We are meeting with them again tommorrow to visit with the puppy. I will discuss this with them then. Thanks Jon

The breeder we got our yorkies from says if a breeder is going to let a pup go earlier than 12 weeks to stay away from that breeder.

I would say that 12 weeks is a good age...my Pixie was 14 wks..she was very small though.:)

I got my first one, one day shy of 7 weeks, and the last one was flown to me at 11 weeks

Well I have done it both ways. I got Molly at 12 weeks. She was very social and easy to train she went to the pad right away. She was very playful and eager to eat. She liked to be with us but could occupy her self.

We got Ellie at 6 weeks. The breeder had to get rid of her because she was going into the hospital for a major surgery. I was reluctant but did it anyway. Our dog Molly had Past away and my skinkids were dying for a new one.

I wouldn't have done it if I wasnt a stay at home mom. We didn't leave her alone until she was 10 weeks out and then I was scared to death.

Ellie was hard to train. she would go to the pads. I wound up storing all of my rugs and just let her go on the hard wood floor. It took her until she was 15 weeks old to figure it out. However I taught her to ring a bell to go outside and she has been great since then.

I had to measure her dog food and watch her eat. We had to give lots of nutracal and Kayo in the water. I was scared to death if she went to sleep and it wasn't "nap time" I would wake her up and give her nutracal.

She is so sweet but I think she missed out alot of valuable time with her mother. I am her mama and she is very attached. I can't do anything with out her being right beside me. ( She even helps fold clothes. Pulling the out of the dryer for me if I want her to or not!) She doesn't know what to do with other dogs. I would wait if I were you.

Maybe they would be willing to hold her for a few more weeks for you? I have gotten mine at 8 wks and 11 wks, the one that came home at 8 wks is more difficult for me but I really think it's her personality not so much the age she came here.

Are you home all the time? I don't think there is anything at all wrong with getting them at 10 weeks..

We got our first yorkie when she was 8 weeks old, and she adjsuted to us better in all honesty than Ava whom we got at a little over 11 weeks. The one thing Ava did better was potty. She was practially already potty trained! truthfully I like the idea of waiting that extra few weeks so they can bond with their mommies, mature, spend time with litter mates and gain extra strength.

this is a good question...I often wondered this....we brought Mya home at 7 1/2 weeks old, we had to soften her food before she could eat, but as far as everything else she was fine.

I agree with you. I had a couple that I felt were mature and big enough to go around 10 weeks....But I still wouldnt consider it before 12 weeks.

And the littler ones? No way will they go at 12 weeks.

And call me horrible....but I wont even sell to someone who calls me with kids yelling in the background. I know if the kids act like that.Theres a good chance I would sell my puppy (my baby for weeks) to a family that they may get hurt in or worse. :thumbdown I dont want to sell a puppy that bad.

I will be home with the puppy for at least the next 3 months. I am recovering from ankle surgery, again (2 surgeries last year). As I stated in my information post these people really aren't what I would call breeders. They are an older spanish speaking couple that loves their dogs and accidently let the male get to her and ended up with 3 puppies. They don't seem to know alot about the puppies. But I can tell they really love the dogs and the puppies and they seem to be well taken care of. I talked to them this morning and we are going to wait at least another week. The puppies were born Dec 17. My ten year old daughter is going crazy having to wait for her new baby to come home. She has named her Little Miss Sophie. Thanks Jon

Theres yelling ...screaming etc. VERY bad..I've had a couple that I cant even hear, AND they cant hear me .I've told them the truth...

Then I just dont answer when I see the number...
I know they may have been a nice family.
I just wasnt willing to take that chance.

I also wont talk to people who ask. How little are they going to be.
I only want a tiny one.....

Or someone who says....
"Can you tell me how to Crate train....
I work all day"
Then maybe you dont have time for a puppy.
Not one of my puppies anyways...

I dont care about the money
I care about my babies going to good homes

remembers that Sal was 5 weeks when I brought him home. On Monday here will be 16 weeks and ever healthly little boy. I would have to say 8-12 weeks before I would bring another little boys into this house.

I say anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks. A lot depends on the size of the puppy and how well he is eating and the type of home he is going to. Also it is important to know how that puppy is being cared for after weening. Some breeders may keep them 12 weeks but they are kept in small pens, or cages and not necessarily well socialized and handled often. I think it is sometimes harder on puppies (and me) that have been in my home 12 weeks, really bonded to me and their surrounding and then they are sent away. Of course people that show want to keep the puppies until as least 12 weeks so they can evaluate them and eliminate any that do not meet the standard as a show prospect. In my area where I live it is rare for breeders to keep puppies until 12 weeks, most sell at 7 to 9 weeks.

I have to say, although mine wasn't quite 7 weeks(the first one), she was very healthy, was eating very well, and acutally house broke very fast, nor did I have any kind of biting or any other bad habits out of her....I have always used the xpen, never put them in the bathroom, as I saw what kind of destruction could be done, mold chewing, etc. etc...

I used the bathroom for my Schnauzer when she was a puppy(she has gone over the rainbow bridge 5 years ago) and my 4 year old Bichon when we were in the training stage and didn't have a problems. I don't have any room in my house for a xpen so that leaves me with the option of leaving her in a crate or giving her some freedom to go potty if she needs to while I'm gone.

It is so hard to know what is the right way to do it and I found this worked for me in the past so I will try it with my new one too.
