If Something is dropped pick it up fast Hi I'm wondering if anyone else out there has this problem. If we drop something, no matter how small, Tootsie can hear it, even if she is in another room, she will come racing, zero in on whatever it is, and grab it, and run like crazy in the other direction. She thinks of it as a treasure. I started chasing her, and can NOT catch her.(She loves this, too) This morning, my husband dropped his cholesterol pill on the kitchen floor, sure enough, she grabbed it. Luckily, the coating on the pill is very bitter, and she spit it out. Once again, needless to say, my heart was in my mouth. The only way to get something away from her is to yell "treat" and usually, she will exchange whatever she has swiped for that treat. Now, she has gotten an award for doing something wrong. (She is so fast, she can pick a dime up on the run) I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions? Janelles |
Oh gosh! I know what you mean! Pixie will grab it and run! if its edible its gone in a second!:eek: She loves to be chased and thinks the whole thing is a game:rolleyes: |

I taught my girls "drop it" If they listen, they get a treat. If they don't they get nothing and I ignore them for a while. NEVER chase! It's a terrier trait that they love to be chased and if you play into that, they will NEVER come to you when called;) THey sure are fast little doggies:laugh: |

i have that problem also martini hears everything whatever she sees she tries to eat i grab her and take it right out of her mouth real fast and tell her no...she thinks its always for her...its a bad habit of hers |

Hi I've tried saying drop it, but that falls on deaf ears, and she still takes off, and most of the time, it is a situation where I HAVE to get whatever she has away from her, fast. She is such a quick thinking, mischievious little monkey, that it is so hard to keep up to her. I have told my husband that if she was a child, she is the one that we would get called into school, and find her sitting in the principal's office. Teddy, on the other hand is an entirely different personality. He's calm, laid back and obedient. There is a big difference between the two of them. (Just like human siblings) Janelles |
i agree and talk about fast omg i sometimes go to the other room and boom i look down and she is right near me im like wait u were just in the other room ...she is speedy lol... |
My Pommie is the problem in our house. He listens when I say "drop it" but sometimes it's too late by the time the words are out of my mouth. I've had to use peroxide three times since I rescued him five months ago. He's only 8 mo. old. :( Joanne :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :dog: |
My kitchen floor never has food crumbs on it thanks to the 6 little brown eyes that watch my every move when I'm cooking. I could probably make a casserole out of everything they have eaten that's dropped. :D As for all medications I'd say keep them in a bathroom medicine drawer or drawer and not let the dog in when the meds are taken. I don't know what else to suggest. :p |
:yelrotflm :yelrotflm :yelrotflm Buddy will see something...sneak up to it very quietly...pick it up....and RUN! He has really gotten good at running under the bed. When we had the bone problem where he started getting aggressive with the bones and would hide under the bed, we had to move the mattresses. We move the mattresses off of the bed at least four/five times a week to get him and the thing he picked up from under the bed! LOL! |
Nothing is safe in this house from Bubba. If you say "drop it he will" but runs over to where the treats are kept. Sissy is more laid back and doesn't bother anything. |
They have some wonderful ears and they pick up on every sound. Oh ours will drop it also but only reward for the drop it. I make sure I put the meds and take them where they can't get to them. That would be serious. But chasing them is a bad habit for humans as they think that is a game. Does us no good other than cause a bigger issue. |
Feel your pain. "Drop it" just can't compete in the brain with whatever his treasure. NEVER CHASE! You will only increase the odds that they will quickly swallow to "save" their treasure. I keep treats in small tupperware bowls. When Coby picks up something (since I never chase, he usually doesn't take off so quickly), I immediately say "treat" and shake the bowl. He will usually drop whatever's in his mouth. I agree it feels like reinforcing the behavior in order to get the treat. But in the moment, I'm simply glad that works! Great thread - I'll be watching for new ideas! |
