Ears A few days ago there was a post about making the ears go up... Any suggestions on explaining to the groomer how to shave the ears? Empanada makes will his ears go up when he is really mad about something and screaming his head off but other than that they are down. |
my coco's ears are the same way,i shave them myself using an eyebrow trimmer i bought from walmart.i shave the entire ear in and out. my coco still haven't loss all his teeth so i'm still hoping they will go up! i tried taping but it hurts him too much, i also massage them everynight not sure if i'm massaging right though. but you can tell the groomer to shave them 1/3 ways down in a v shape, and then massage them. |
Sophies ears were floppy until recently also... I wanted to tape them...bought the non irritating tape and all... But.. At her 12 wk check and shots....must of stressed her out or something...those ears shot up...and have been up ever since!!! ;) Like the shots helped somehow if that makes any crazy sense...lol They look a bit oversized for her head...my daughter refers to her as Bambi...lol :p |
Usually you should shave one third of the ear, starting when the puppy is about 4 to 6 weeks old till death. I have a special trimming maschine for the ears from Whal, its smaller then the other ones, so the shaving is easier. I trim the ears every two weeks. |
I got a little cordless personal trimmer (like a tiny electric shaver). It is much better than messing with the cord. Quiet is better, too. Shave the top 1/3, but dont brush the ear hair upward below the line. You want that part to grow and fall back down. I have also heard that feeding them cottage cheese can help build the calcium in their ears. I am giving it to my puppies (but I like it, too; so we all get a bite every morning). I shaved one-third of my puppies ears, but now I am going to trim them all the way down. They are 7 1/2 weeks old. |

LOL!! Olivia is still growing into her ears, too! My boyfriend says she looks like the woodchuck from Caddyshack! Bambi is a much nicer comparison. |
Indiana's ears aren't up, but about 3 weeks ago they were both completely up for about 1 week, then all of his teeth starting falling out and they went completely flat again. Now one is at half mast and the other is still down. I shave them also, but because his ears are thicker I shave the whole ear inside and out. I use oster A5's with a #30 blade. It's a pretty big clipper but I have a horse and that's what I have for her so I just had to buy a new blade. He was kinda squirmy at first but now sits like a trooper. Been reading all the suggestions, hadn't thought about adding more calcium to his diet. He'll be 6 months at end of August and I'm told that if they aren't up by then they probably won't go up. He's a bigger dog, 8lbs now at 5 months. He's cute anyway and the best little guy so I don't really care. |
. lexi's ears are driving me nuts.. one ear is totally straight up and pointy, looks great, the other one is totally down.... i love her but, she looks so funny. im wondering if the other ear will go up at all.... i wouldn't mind if they were both down... i do give her some cottage cheese, hasnt worked yet help? |
Shaving Ears My female Abigail is 4 and a half months old, since the 12 week mark I have been stressed about 1 or both ears standing. One week they were up, one week they were down or maybe one only etc. I got Artie my male at 20 weeks old and his ears were already up and to this day are still standing, no matter what emotions at the time! I have fed her everything from cottage cheese to calcium supplements. I find that the only way they go and stay up is to shave all of her ears, inside and the whole ear on the outside and especially the edges it makes her ears look smaller too. As short as possible! It's best to do it every week at least every other week. :aimeeyork |
. her ears are shaved...and trimmed thats why i dont understand why one ear is down and why wont it go up |
Lexi's ears 1 Attachment(s) Hi, I also have a Lexy and her ears were down and a nice person on this forum suggested that I shave the ears front and back and then tape them. Well let me tell you how I did it; I shaved them taped them with surgical tape. All I did was prop them up tape them like closed (together) then, I took masking tape to place a bar connecting them and then is just 3 days when I took the tape off those ears were straight up like a pin. |
. didnt she try and bite off the tape ? |

Good Luck  |
. Only Do One Ear Right? Since The Other One Is Already Up.my Luck , Ill Do One Ear And The Other One Will Come Down.. |
My Moxie had one ear up and one ear down then one day they just both stood up. Someone mentioned that teething effects the ears I'm not sure about this but I can say that when his back teeth broke through was the same time his ear stood up....Good luck. |
Duncan's ears are down but sometimes one will start to stand up and he shakes his head like it bothers him and down it goes again. He is teething and I have been giving him cottage cheese. |

Maybe you should do them both. I really works, I should of taken a picture of her so you could see how it's done. I used surgical tape, stood them up and taped them shut only 3 quarters of the way up, then used the masking tape as a bar to hold them together. Let us know what happens  |
. thanks im going to try that. both ears... i hope i can keep her still ... |
Ears Teething will cause problems for some babies- and then after teething is done the ears can pop up. It is an individual thing. Being stressed out can also make a little one drop the ears. I start trimming at three weeks of age and remove the hair from inside and outside of the ear 1/3 of the way down and in a v shape. At five weeks if the ears are not up I start using tape. I trim hair once a week- seems that hair on the ears grows very quickly. I have never had a puppy whose ears did not stand up in the long run. Wnalegria |
Empanada is almost 8 months I haven't trimmed his ears because I didnt know I was supposed to I just thought they would go up by their self. Is there something wrong with him because his ears arent up yet? We're going to get his ears trimmed this weekend then they should go up right? Is he ok???? |
Rika's ears are down and have been since she was born. Her ears were always too big to ever go up and I prefer them down anyway. So much cuter. |
We went and got Empanada's ears shaved and they still aren't going up. He is 8 months so I think all his teeth are in but they still aren't going up. How long does it take???? Ok its only been 2 days but still I want them NOW :) |

Lexy's ears only took 3 days for them to go up. This is what I did. I shaved her ears, then I used surgical tape stood the ears up and like taped each ear closed but only 3/4's of the way up, then I used masking tape as a bridge between them. I don't think it bothered her you know she scratched it with her paw for about 5 minutes but then she forgot about it and kept playing. It only took 3 days. If you want you can privately email me and I will give you my phone number to help you out. I couldn't believe it when I took off that tape. Look at the before and after pictures. I doesn't seem to let me put the after picture but you've seen it. |
:) This sounds strange but give it a try . . . take a "tampon" and cut the string off. You will need help with this. Lay the "tampon" inside the ear . . . and put some tape around this. Acts as a splint. Give it a try!!!!! |
