silky terriers I didn't know silky terriers looked so much like yorkies.. I want a YORKIE how can I tell that I am getting a yorkie if the breeder doesn't have papers??? |
Without papers you cant be 100% sure but trusting you will see the parents of the puppies you will get an idea of what the puppies will look like as adults. Silky's are similar looking to yorkies but they have longer faces and weigh more than a yorkie..do a quick google search of a yorkie and silky and you will see the difference..:) good luck with your search!! Dawn |
What Dawn said is correct, however, if it's a larger Yorkie it may be hard to tell without papers. I say that because when I got Buddy, he has papers, he did appear to look like a Silky when I saw them on a AKC dog show on TV. Actually he looked exactally like the one being shown. Even my daughter called telling me it was Buddy's twin! But Buddy is all Yorkie. My neighbor has a female Silky and you can see the difference in the two. Strange but without papers I am not 100% sure you could tell. |

there you can look at the difference, although, as pups they almost look identical. If she breeds both kinds of dogs, or any other kind of dog for that matter, and with no papers, I probably wouldn't get one, unless you're getting a super good deal, and you find one you can't resist |
Overbreeding :( I remember reading an AKC article a few years back about the differences of the two breeds and the reasons for similarities in the pet world. With the irresponsible breeding practices going on, individual characteristics of the two breeds have blurred. Many BYB are breeding yorkies to silkies (unintentionally/intentionally)... it's sad. You can't even tell a Yorkie from a silky these days! Some "yorkie" breeders aren't even aware of the "silky" breed. These two beautiful breeds are loosing their identities...real fast! :( |
The Silky was developed in the late 1800's by breeding the Yorkshire Terrier to the Australian Terrier. During this period some were being shown as Silkys and some were being show as Yorkshire Terriers. In 1906 the Silky was established as a breed, that is why there are so many similarities. |
Your best bet is to buy from a reputable breeder...Someone who knows the history of his/her dogs' pedigrees, etc. |
In November, I kept a little Silky puppy for part of a day. He had become lost because of the ignorance of his owners. He was just about six weeks old and cute as a button and sweet as can be. |
I had my butt handed to me last week. At Petco I said to a lady, "oh how adorable your Yorkie is" and she snapped back "he's not a da*n Yorkie he's a silkie!" Ummm...Excuse me  |

My groomer thinks Chachi is really a silky. He is a larger yorkie |
I dont think just size can distinguish the difference between a yorkie and a silky because I have seen some bigger dog that still look like yorkies, but at the same time when I first became a member here I was so sure a few of the dogs on here were silkies. you can easily get confused |
If I'm not mistaken, don't Yorkies have Australian Terrier in their heritage? I know that Yorkies were developed by breeding a few kinds of terriers, and may also carry Maltese in their bloodline. So if Silkies were developed by breeding Yorkshire Terriers back to the Australian Terrier, this would explain why so many Yorkies look like Silkies, and vica versa. This would also mean that the only thing that really distinguishes a Yorkie from a Silky, is that the Australian Terrier blood is more prevalent in the Silkie, but they both still have it. I've always suspected that my Mother's larger Yorkie has Silky in him. |

Looks all Yorkie to me! |
1 Attachment(s) I went to Pet Warehouse a couple of weeks ago, and they are now selling puppies:mad: . They had some yorkies that were small (and kind of sickly looking) A lady was looking at them, and when I walked by with Preston she said something about wanting one that looked more like Preston, and the lady that worked there said she thought he was a silky, that yorkies aren't supposed to look like him. I know Preston is a bit of a teapot, but come on. Here is my little Preston doodle after his first snow romp. |
