How to teach my Yorkie to come. Does anyone have good ideas on how to teach my Yorkie to "Come" on command? Can you be a little technical for me please. Somebody wrote me a told me to give my yorkie treats. I know they were only trying to help, but I kinda figured that part out already. |
what has always worked for me is to start out with a leash, and yes, treats. it helps if they know sit and stay first. I would have them sit and stay, with the leash on (hold the other end). Walk to the other end and say "come" firmly... if they don't budge give a little tug and when they start to move toward you...LOTS of praise. and treat when they are near you. Do it over and over. Eventually i would do it off leash. you have to follow through though. When they don't come, you HAVE to go get them (off leash i mean) Sorry about the missed caps...my laptop needs help... Good luck! deb |

i know its not what you wanted to hear, but it works. if you want a step by step guide im sure you could find it on the net and there are tons of great puppy training books out there too. good luck! |
Hand targeting I used hand targeting. Zoey learned in about 2 days using this method. Before that I had to chase her. Here is a thread where another member provided a link. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ht=hand+signal |
Well, since we just paid an obedience trainer $500 for the 2 outside dogs, yes, I know how to get them to come..I've just not worked with my 4 yet..too hard when you have so many..it needs to be done one on one..so, you take them in a separate room..let them run around for a bit, then have the treats in a treat bag...you want to get their attention, so pull a treat out of the bag, hold it up in the air, then call them by name(like snickers come)and make sure the treat is up high for them to see..when they come, then have them sit and give them the treat..with a small puppy, about 10 min. at a time is all you want to spend with them doing it..then you can gradually start working with them longer.. |
Copper knows the command come so well, we used lots of treats. However he only does this when he wants to, It is so automatic he even starts to come gets alomst to me and turns arround runs the other way to do what he wants. So good luck.;) For us stay works better because then I just walk over and pick him up. |
I'm still working with Nolee, doing what joeysmom said. I put Nolee in a beginner class and that is the method used. You have to be persistant. Its a continuous learn process. He does well, but can't let up. Good luck! |
Lots of Luck, mine have me trained to come when they call. I guess it's a Yorkie thing:) |
My husband and I got on either side of the room and called Cooper back and forth between us several times. Each time he got a treat and within days he was following the "come" command. It was pretty funny watching him RACE back and forth to get the treat! |
