Which one determines litter size male or female
 
Hello I just bought a male yorkie for stud.The people I bought him from said he was a proven stud he is 4.They also told me that he has 4-6 puppies.I always thought the female determined how many puppies were made but I have heard from several people tha it is the male.I was just trying to get some more thoughts on the subject.

I've never heard to where it's either myself. I know my neighbor bred her dog(pekignese) 3 times to the same male, each time it had a different amt. of pups

I want to say I am not for sure but I always thought the female determines the litter size by how many eggs she releases........????? MyFairLacy...Michele(she is a Vet student @ Texas A&M, a very smart young lady).... where are you, these is a question for you?????

well, I could be wrong but I think the female determines how many and the male what sex. I have two girls that have five puppies each time they are bred and it doesn't matter to what male. Now, on the other hand, My little stud, ceeby is known for producing girls. he has had 18 babies and only five have been boys. he has been bred to four females. kandy twice.

The female determines the size of the litter.....she drops her eggs and the male fertilizes them and he determines the sex of the puppies.

From what others posted, and because in humans, it's the female who determines if its twins or not, I would assume that it's the female.

I've heard this about the males determining the sex...if I were to ever breed, I think I would only breed with a male that throws females..LOL
I'll know in March how true this is, as Ginger had 3 brothers(she was the only girl) and the breeder just bred the same father with Gingers Mom again..they're due in March

That is the way I have heard it as well. The size of the litter is by the female and sex by the male. I have also heard you have a good male you have nice puppies.

:thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup: That's correct. Sperm determines the sex (just like in humans...XX or XY), and eggs determine the number of puppies. Actually each time they tie they can fertilize another egg or two.

Well, you guys know what nice, beautiful babies Ceeby throws so it must be true but my mama's are just as nice as the he is. But I have always heard that the stud IS the most important and you should pick him with great care.

I'm sure both the male may play a small role in litter size due to genetics...but I've always been told that it is the female that determines litter size. The female releases several eggs while in heat. There are normally several that are fertilized, but not all of them attach to the uterine wall and develop. The female's body will absorb unfertilized eggs and can absorb some of the embryos if the amount fertilized is too great in number for her to carry.

The male does determine the sex of the puppies. A female is XX so the mother always passes on an X chromosome onto every puppy. A male is XY so his sperm will carry either an X chromosome or a Y Chromosome. Puppies that inherit two X chromosomes will be female and puppies that inherit an X and a Y will be male

I have a female and she throws two pups each time. With the male I use to have, it was two females and then two males. then I see others who throw 5-6 puppies. So I am hoping my new Maravilhosa will throw better then two. Only because it takes the same amount of effort on my part. keeps in at home not matter if you have 1 or a good size litter.. I only have a litter per year at this time, and with the way we live, I cannot see me having any more dogs. I have two females now, and two pet only yorkies. I co own my male, he is new so we will see how it goes when the time comes.

I knew the female was the one to produce the amount, and I knew the male produced the sex, what I do not understand some times is how a 7 pounder can throw one or two, and a 5 pounder can throw a huge litter..

anyone have a suggestion on that question..

I hope you keep us informed on baby's and post pics, we love puppy piles..LOL

I know what you mean I have a 4lb girl and she had a litter of 4 and them the biggest one7+had only 2.I was very surprised and puzzled.
