Six Puppies, We Are Looking For Advice, Please!!!! We are new members, Our two year old female just gave birth to SIX puppies on monday. All are well but we have a little problem. We had company last evening and ever since they left she has acted strange. She now has moved the pups to a different place in our room outside of her whelping box. Does anyone know what we should do? I am not sure if I should leave them alone or move them back. She is keeping them warm by hiding them under a pillow. She seems to be doing a great job on her own but I am definetly looking for some support from someone with experience. Thanks in advance. Regan |
Ooh, I don't know. Could you possibly move her whelping box to the area she took the puppies? Sorry I'm not much help but there are a lot of experienced people on here that could possibly help you. Also, Welcome to YT! |
she is hiding them cause she doesn't feel they are safe, can you move the box to where she has moved them:) Welcome to yt! and congratulations |
I would ask people in the breeder section...they would have great advice on this. congrats on all the pups!!! |
It's never a good idea to have anyone come look at the pups so soon and is why she is moving them. You need to set her and the pups up in a quiet place where there will not be anyone walking around or walking by. If the mother gets too stressed it can cut down on the amount of milk she's able to produce for her babies. |
did your company hold the pups? She may feel threatened and she is trying to keep them safe. I would not let anyone hold the pups except you for about 4 weeks. |
She is merely protecting her babies. No one EVER gets near my babies until they are several weeks old except my hubby and sometimes not even him. You need to take that pillow away too before they smother. can you put the whelping box in an x-pen or some onther very small closed in space where she has to stay with them. no towels, blankets or pillows or anything else she can hide them under. |
Welcome to YT! Congrats on the litter. Yes, it is not good for her babies to be around so many people and she knows it. That's why she has moved them. But you want to keep her & the babies safe so get them back in the whelping box & either use a baby gate to keep her in the room or an x-pen around the whelping box. If you gate her in, I would do it in a room where there is not another place for her to hide with her pups - do this in your kitchen or a large bathroom. Good luck. Would love to see pictures when everyone is settled in. |
I see your in NY... Be very careful they don't chill as they will die quick if they are tinny.... I keep all my pups on heated pad till they avoid it by crawling off the pad... usually 4 weeks old. On my tinny ones they keep on till they leave... Never let any one look or handle pups, EVER!!! Only you.. who she trust. Also watch her for not eating as she may get sick on you.. low calciumn.. Very touchy... Make sure she's eating tons and give vitamines.. She's had a big litter and they can be lost easily as well as y ou female..:) ...God bless and good luck. |
Congratulations on your new babies....welcome to YT.....I can't add much more advice. Just welcome to YT.... |
