First heat I know the age can vary but when did your yorkie have it's first heat? I ended up holding off on Bella's spay due to the holidays and finances. When I was ready to make an appt she then broke her leg and I don't really want to put her through being spayed while she has a splint on her leg so again, i'm holding off. I'm very nervous about her going into heat though and the mess that can go along with it. I can always buy her panties but really she is pee pad trained and I think that will end up being a total nightmare as well. UGH.. I don't know what to do She will be 8 months old on Feb. 8th. Would you go ahead and have it done anyway is you were in this position? |
My precocious little angel wasn't even 7 months when she went into heat. |
Most Yorkies come in heat between 8 to 12 of age. I have heard some say that it is better to get them fixed before their first heat and some say to let them have a heat first. If I were you I would call my vet and ask what they recommend. As long as you don't have a male in the house then letting her have her first heat should not be that big of a deal. How long is she going to have a cast on? I hope she gets well soon. |
I wouldn't worry about the mess. Before Ellie was spayed the only mess was a few drops of blood on blankets and pillows. The bigger concern is allowing her to go into heat because it increases her chances of getting mammary cancer. I would ask your vet what they think but would lean toward waiting because her body is working to heal her leg right now and I'm not sure it would be healthy to have to try to heal the spay area at the same time. |
I definately agree with EllieMay. Most dogs keep themselves pretty clean. I don't know if she gets on the furniture but probably not with a broken leg. Also the risk of bleeding is greater if the surgery is done close to them going into heat |
Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your replies. She has been in the splint for 3 weeks now and will have it for 3 to 5 more weeks depending on how it is healing. She get's another x-ray next week. I'm glad to hear that it would be a minimal mess. I had a Chocolate lab who had a few heats before we spayed her and it never was an issue because (I know this sounds gross) but my neutered Male Black lab kept her cleaned as well as what she did herself. I don't have any male dogs at all now so mistake are a non-issue. |
