Normal behavior? I just got my Yorkie 3 days ago and he does something that seems unusual to me. He takes 1-2 bites of food (food bowl is in his xpen) and runs and jumps out of his pen and then goes back into his pen and does the same thing until he's done. I know it can't be good for him to eat like that I'm afraid he might get sick or choke. Did any of your yorkies do that? I probably should shut the door to the pen when he's eating or move the food bowls? |

Tessa does this as well although she isn't in a pen. She will grap a bite and fling it in the air, then chase it after and swat it with her paw, then eat it and run over to the bowl and do it all over again. |
Welcome to yt. Murfee doesn't do that but my last little baby boy did that his whole life. |
My Jewels who is 3 also does that |
Frimousse and Minnie are adults and do that everytime they eat . |
Magic does that and she is now 3..she will put a couple of pieces in her mouth and find a good spot to eat them and then go back to her bowl and get a few more and do the same thing until she is done eating. She has gotten a little bit better b/c we now have four in the house and if she takes too long the others will try and get her food. But is always so cute, she just loves to play with her food!! |

Lola does the same thing...it is hilarious to watch. She simply MUST play with her food...one piece of kibble at a time. Quote:

Are you feeding your dog on cold floor or on a rug? Teddi does this when I feed her on cold floor like her paws are cold so she takes the food over to the rug to eat it where it is warmer. |
Yep, sounds like Gizmo. I swear he has to "kill" his food before he eats it. |
1 Attachment(s) My Willy used to do something like that too. His whole life he never put his face in his bowl to eat. It was always pulling the kibble out one at a time with his little paw and eating them one at a time. As he got older, he used to sort thru the pieces that were "unacceptable" and fling them across the floor. It was hysterical to watch! Here is the aftermath of his picky eating... |
it's normal..Ginger (almost 6 mos) picks some out puts it on the floor and keeps digging in the bowl, until she finds the right piece(it's all the same)...but, somedays her and the other yorkie take about 5-6 pieces of food, and either lays it on the carpet and then eats one at a time, or they will take it to their beds and dump it out of their mouths in to their beds then eat it |
Both Harmony and Allegro love playing with their food. They will take one piece of kibble and fling in the air and the pounce on and paw it and then after the decided they have "killed" the kibble they will eat it, lol. It is the funniest thing to watch. I think it is good in a way, it shows that they are getting fed enough that they want to play with their food. My cocker spaniel doesn't play with her food but takes forever to eat it. She will take two to three pieces of kibble in her mouth, walk over to her bed, sit down and drop the kibble on the ground. She then eats one kibble at a time and then goes back to the bowl and starts all over. It takes her about 30 minutes to an hour to eat a bowl of dog food. It these little antics that you learn to love and appreciate and will miss someday. |
Maggy May does this all the time to, I can't help but laugh at her. I mean, to see a 10 week old lil girlie sneak a bite and then run like she's trying to make the world laugh just cracks me up! She doesn't do it all the time, but boy when she does it's so funny! I love these lil puppy antics. |
Hes being fed on top of shower curtain that I have laid down in his xpen, but other than that his bowls are on the curtain |

I guess his Mama didn't teach him not to play with his food! |
scrappy does this too he will get a couple bites of dog food and runs off and eats it and goes back and does it all over until he has gotten full. |
BB does that all the time, he is now 6 months, he did tis when he was 8 weeks old..i guess he just like to have some fun while he is eating his foods. |
All of mine do this also. I just figured it was a Yorkie Thing. Just imagine four of them running back and forth with food. |
A close friend who is dog nuts and has done very well with training not just dogs but horses too said he's used to fighting for his food so his littermates didnt eat all of it? |
