I'm new Hello all, Just wanted to introduce myself to your forum. I'm the new mom to Zoey, who is 3 years old. She was adopted from a family that could no longer care for her and we're happy to have her. She's been great so far with just a few minor "offenses." Is it normal for a Yorkie to growl at you when you walk by the food bowl? What about nipping at your heels for no apparent reason? Hopefully our cats will feel the love, but for now...not so much. Thanks for any advice you have for a new mom. Stephanie |
Hi & Welcome to YT...she needs to get use to u and the enviroment so i wouldnt worry so much bout it right now;) |

Hello and welcome to YT. I agree with everyone else in that she is just going through and adjusting period right now. Puppies usually adjust fairly well & quickly with plenty of love, gentleness & patience. Now she's already an adult so not sure if it may take longer or shorter to adjust but just be patient, talk to her alot, make her feel as comfortable in her new home as possible and I'm sure she'll come around. Oh, and my dogs have been around the cat for a couple of years(Diva anyway) and you'd think they just met today....you'll have to just let the cat and dog work it out themselves as to when they're ready to accept eachother...don't force it. |

Welcome to YT!! How wonderful of you to give Zoey a forever home. How long has she been with you? I adopted my 2 from someone else when they were almost 1 1/2 yrs old - I've had them almost 5 yrs now. My male Siamese didn't mind them at all until he passed a year ago. But my female still has her moments - sometimes for no reason she will bat at the dogs -- she's jealous. But other times she will cuddle up near them, if they are with me - for the warmth  My Roxy does growl sometimes when she is afraid somebody will get something that is hers or she wants to be hers. This actually a newer trait - I attribute it to aging. But she doesn't growl about her food - more often if I have a snack while sitting on the couch & she is near me, she growls at everybody else - like I'm going to share with her (fat chance) I do correct her & tell her no. It sounds like Zoey is still transitioning. |
Just wanted to say :welcome4: and Im sure you'll get answers to all your questions.... For I dont know the answers to your questions. However, given that she's new to your family...she probably just needs time to adjust and get familiar with her new surroundings :) Cant wait to see pics :D |
Congrats on your new addition. She'll bring much joy to your lives. I would try to work with her so she won't be aggressive around her food. Something I do with mine when I bring them home is sit with them on the floor and feed them from my fingers. I take their "things" whether it is food or toys and give them back. I get right in their face while they're puppies, so that there won't be any "protective" issues later. Of course, I'm starting with puppies. I suppose it would be a similar situation that you would just have to work with on an older one, but I would encourage you to do it. I think that is a habit you don't want to continue. Good luck.:) |

As for the growling when walking by the food bowl, I would think that's food aggressiveness. I don't think it's a good thing when she is nipping at your heels. That is something you should not tolerate. I hope it's just because she's in a new enviroment and that it's only temporary, if not, hopefully you can have that corrected. Good luck to you and your new addition! Please post some pictures :). |
