How much do you feed? Have health problems been ruled out? |
I am having the exact same problem Kelly! My Tatum is SO chubby....I just KNOW she is overweight. She is very tiny and I can just tell by looking at her that for her size she is way too fat. I can't feel her ribs either :( It's funny because she is so much smaller than Stedman, yet she is just so SOLID. When they are wet, Stedman looks sooo skinny, and Tatum just has this HUGE belly! Her head is very tiny too - and her stomach just doesn't look proportioned with the rest of her body (of course it isn't near as obvious when they aren't soaking wet) - she still looks like a chubb though even when she ISN'T wet lol. Have you tried putting Lola on a feeding schedule? I would LOVE to put Tatum on one, however, I can't do it because of Stedman. He is on the skinny side, and isn't a big eater - so I need to have the food down and available to him at all times since he DOESN'T eat alot...I have to make sure the food is there for whenever he DOES want to eat. And then if the food is down, OF COURSE Tatum is going to eat it :( I just don't know what to do!! :( Since Lola is your only baby though, putting her on a feeding schedule might be a great option for you. I am just totally clueless in my case though :( |
I've got a big yorkie(14 lbs)..she's on the same food as all the other inside dogs, even though I put their food down when I get up in the morning, and then pick it up at 5:00, she doesn't eat anymore than the other 4..my shih tzu stays right at 10 lbs. my biewer bounces from 6-7 lbs. Ginger the little one is staying around 4 lbs.,but, haley is 14 lbs..They used to be bred much bigger years ago, and there are throw backs. Haley doesn't look as big as she is, but, she's huge, and hard to pick her up..All of mine get one treat in the morning, so, it's not like she's over eating or getting too many treats..Yours may just be a throw back too..How old is she and how much does she weigh? Mine was 7 lbs up to a year old, and now just turned 5 last week, and put on the other 7 lbs. after her first b-day.. |
Talk to your vet about switching to the low fat version of your dog food. My adults all eat the California Natural Lamb and Rice Senior version. They free feed and we have no weight problems with any of the dogs. When a female is pregnant we add the puppy food and soft food variety for her separately. |
stupid question but could she be pregnant??? |
I would feed less. Don't give her any treats, if you do just give only once a day and only give healthy natural treats. Make sure she exercises a lot, play with her everyday. That's how i got Teddy to slim down, he was a little chubby but now he is back to normal. |
Pixie was really getting overweight, so I stopped leaving kibble down, and they only get fed 2 times a day wet food and a couple of little snacks. I started this 3 weeks ago and she has noticeably lost weight. I just have to ignore their pleading eyes. They are definatley getting enough food, just not too much. |
When our girls put on weight, I started feeding less and cut way back on the treats. I also walked them more. Both has lost weight. I hope this helps. |
thank u everyone from replying! Im gonna try and aanswer everyones ? Lola is about 8 pounds.. but its not like shes just big and healthy her body is very un proportional i deff can tell its an overweight issue... i feed her i believe its 1 cup a day and break the cup in half in the morning and around dinner... its never left out and she never gets more.. its what is said to give her for her weight.. shes on royal canin.. which she will be a year old so i might switch now that shes done wit the puppy food! shes not prego! theres no way.. i just know lol! im going to take her to the vet to c what they say.. its not like i want my baby to be 2 pounds i always knew she wouldnt be a lil one when i got her! she was already 3 pounds at 5 months! It just now i know shes overwight and im scared for her health! |

Im worried too Parker has a really small frame, but he is getting roly-poly! He is also on the Royal Canin, and I try to cut back but he throws a fit at night, pusing his bowl around the kitchen floor. I am thinking about taking him to the vet. Does anyone know what kind of health problems could be indicated by weight gain? I am only feeding around 2/3 cup a day. |

Yes, you definitely want to get her weight down. Precisely measuring the food you give her plus giving her a less fattening food will help. But exercise is the key. If she is not used to exercise, start out slowly and work up to longer walks and playing, too. Not much different than people. Good luck and keep us up to date. |
